We’re in the kitchen today, making sure everything is ready for tomorrow’s Lexington Jewish Food Festival. For your protection and ours, we follow best practices to maintain a safe and secure facility. You’ll notice a police presence inside and outside. We won’t be doing bag checks, as we have in the past; instead, backpacks, duffel and camera bags, large purses, shopping bags or similar items will not be allowed on the premises, so please leave those in your car. We appreciate your understanding, and we can’t wait to see you tomorrow!

Look for these signs Sunday to guide you to parking for the food festival at Temple Adath Israel, 124 North Ashland Avenue. In addition to the temple lot, which will have additional handicapped spaces, festival-goers may use the lot at Coles 735 Main restaurant at Main and North Ashland, and the Main Street lot on the east side of the old Central Office school building. We did not seek permission to use the lot between the two buildings; parking there is at your own risk. Parking also is available in the connected lots behind the Children’s Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass (162 North Ashland) and the house next door (154 North Ashland), and at Ashland Elementary (Cramer and North Ashland). There also is street parking on North Ashland and one-way side streets Bullock, Franklin and Hambrick.

Here’s how the tickets work for Sunday's Lexington Jewish Food Festival. They’re $25 per person; children 12 and younger don’t need their own ticket, but an accompanying adult must use their ticket to “pay” for all items selected. Each ticket has 17 squares, 16 on the edges, 1 in the middle. Everything in the food hall is assigned a value ranging from 1 to 5 squares; there will be a big sign at each station like this one for soup; the number in parentheses indicates how many squares it “costs.” As you go from table to table to get what want, we’ll cross off the appropriate number of squares. For instance, a pastrami on rye from Blue Door Smokehouse (this is a half sandwich) is 5 squares, matzo ball soup and a latke are 3 each, a boureka and Israeli salad are 2 each, a drink and honey cake are 1 each. You’ve just used your 17 squares and have a platter full of food. Attend with a friend or partner who makes completely different choices and agrees to share with you, and you’ve tried everything. Half tickets (9 squares for $13) are available with or after the purchase of a full ticket. Tickets are available only at the door.

Because Dr. Brown’s soda has proven to be very popular at TAI on Rye, our pop-up deli, it’s making an appearance at this year’s food festival. Dr. Brown’s is a long-time New York favorite that’s been around since 1869. We’ll have Cel-Ray (which we’ve been told goes great with pastrami on rye), root beer, and regular and diet cream soda and black cherry. Additionally, Ale-8-One is graciously donating its original signature drink. Ale-8, bottled in nearby Wi******er, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Coincidentally, Temple Adath Israel is celebrating a centennial of its own: 100 years in our building on North Ashland Avenue.

Aside from a roomful of savory Jewish food, there’s another room filled with sweet Jewish treats during the food festival. Our Bake Shop, which on all other days is a library, will be stocked with $5 take-home packages of rugelach, strudel, honey cake, babka bites and hamantaschen, plus coconut macaroons and almond-lemon cookies called almendrados, both of which are gluten-free. The rugelach, strudel, hamantaschen and macaroons come in multiple varieties, and each of those boxes will contain an assortment. It’s all delicious; we’ve been taste-testing to make sure.

We’re excited to announce that Blue Door Smokehouse , a local favorite among barbecue lovers, is turning beef brisket into pastrami for the upcoming Lexington Jewish Food Festival. Owner Jeff Newman will be carving the pastrami by hand and serving it on marble rye. We’re also partnering with Yalla Yall , a Mediterranean pop-up that will be frying falafel on site and pairing it with their handcrafted vegan hummus, plus LexNosh, a catering and personal chef service, is making stuffed cabbage rolls with a vegetarian twist. Tomorrow, find out what's in our bake shop.

We’re 10 days out from the return of the Lexington Jewish Food Festival. Here’s a taste of what’s on the menu: latkes (fresh from the fryer), knishes, matzo ball soup, borscht, kosher hot dogs, bourekas, kugel, a seder sampler (you know you’ve always wanted to try gefilte fish), Israeli salad, and honey cake. But that’s not all. We’ll tell you about the rest tomorrow.

If you couldn’t make it to our pop-up deli today, you missed the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: The Lexington Jewish Food Festival will be back this spring, on Sunday, May 17! It’s been 6 years since the last one (it was all COVID’s fault), but now the stars have finally aligned. If you have any menu requests, feel free to ask; we’ll see what we can do.
