The wisp of steam rising up from your cup of coffee lets you know it’s hot and ready to drink. It beckons you to enjoy a good thing at its most fitting and appropriate time. But that wisp, that warmth, and that moment will pass. Both the coffee and the experience should be enjoyed in light of and in spite of their inevitable conclusion.
”Fugace” is an Italian word meaning fleeting, transient, or temporary, intentionally chosen for a here-today-gone-tomorrow coffee setup. Hopefully, the word can also serve as a reminder of the fleeting nature of our own lives—remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return. But that reminder need not be strictly morose.
There are good things for us to enjoy, and there is good for us to do in the time we have been given. And while there will almost definitely be another cup of coffee, another opportunity to meet, there’s always the small possibility it might not happen. This cup, and this meeting will finish. Enjoy it to the fullest.
