We were on the prowl for perch this Friday and had no problem scaring up our prey at KD’s Bar & Grill.
KD’s has been a favorite of mine ever since their perch first crossed our path back in 2016. They don’t mess around up in Lodi and the perch comes as either a $17 5-piece or $21 8-piece…yes, 8! Being the shameless glutton I am I went for the eight pack and a side of their sour cream and chive fries.
The countryside bar slings fish like Robin Hood slings arrows and my perch fried in a flash - nary enough time to get a nip o’ the Whip in. The plate was overflowing with the octet, a huge handful of fries, slaw, beans, and rye. I hardly had room to fit a blob of tartar in, but after some shuffling and offloading, found the needed nook.
KD’s has always been true to the perch game, but these fillets certainly caught my attention. They were grandiose and didn’t have the hallmarks that true yellow perch has when it’s fried. Regardless, they were incredibly tasty thanks to KD’s signature crumbly breading and I actually polished off the entire school. The fries shared a similar fate, joining their brethren in the bottom of my belly.
The tartar lives in a big squeeze bottle at the table - there for the taking, and take I did. It’s a good one. The rye was soft and fresh, the slaw brought the pop, and the side of baked beans is always a nice bonus even if they are just Van Camp’s (which I think they were). They reminded me of home.
While I can’t say for certain that this perch was true yellow perch I’ll give KD’s the benefit of the doubt. They’ve never led me astray before and it didn’t actually taste like pike-perch to me…PP DOES have a different flavor altogether. Overall, we continue to highly recommend this Fish Fry and think it’s still pretty killer.
