004 - Space for Summer

As we approach our one year anniversary, we're doing some serious reflection on where to focus our attention and energy. More on that next month, but for now, coffee, hi-fi, and community engagement! In July, we'll introduce more intentional listening events, highlight some exciting (and wild) coffees, and embrace the creative community engagement we've gotten so much out of in the past few months. These moments have brought us great joy and peace, especially as we continue to face the challenges of operating our cafe amidst invasive construction and other practices that actively prevent us from our right to quiet enjoyment.

Coffee & Brunch

Our Fri-Sat-Sun brunch (8:30 am - 12:30 pm) is still kicking and while we’re taking it slow, we’re still thrilled with the response. We feature high quality ingredients -- good eggs, good cornmeal, tasty tomatillos, and amazing grains for our Farmer's Porridge. No fryers, no ultra processed foods. Just like our coffee, we want to keep it simple and do the best we can with the best ingredients. A few summer drinks are coming mid-July. Think bright, herbal, floral, and complementing, not detracting.

On coffee: From our primary roaster, Unity Sourcing & Roasting (https://unity.coffee/) , we’re drinking Jammy Pacamara, a competition-level Thermal Shock nano lot from Patio Bonito, Colombia at the moment. It's jammy. We also got some wild samples from our friends at Unity and look forward to finding just the right coffee(s) to bring on next. As always, we have our Cloudscape espresso and batch brew at the ready.

In early June, we hosted our first rotating guest micro-roaster, Tomodachi Coffee Roasters (https://tomodachi.coffee/) , and it was a hit. Sharing more about the coffees we know and love, local roasters, and the process behind this fruit is something we've always aspired to. To that end, we're hosting our second rotating guest micro-roaster in July, Lumen Coffee (https://lumencoffeela.com/) . We'll have the following coffees on batch brew and available for retail from July 1 until sold out:

Colombia Hacienda Venecia
Anaerobic natural, light roast
strawberry / grape / melon

Bolivia Finca El Mirador Gesha
Natural, light roast
Producer: Antonio Mamani
Altitude: 1650m
milk chocolate / fresh cranberry / green apple

The roaster will be on hand July 5 (time TBA) to share more about the coffees, roasting process, home brewing, and anything else folks want to know.

Upcoming Events

July 5: Meet the Roaster - Lumen Coffee
Lumen Coffee (https://lumencoffeela.com/) will be in town (time TBA) to share more about the coffees we've brought on for our monthly guest roaster, their process, and anything else they might want to share. Come on by to try some of their coffees and learn about their process!

July 13: Inaugural Analog Hour
An RSVP only (but free!) dedicated listening event -- no devices, no screens, just listening and connection. Details forthcoming.

July 19 - 31: Christmas in July
Featuring our favorite holiday music throughout the end of the month, including Aimee Mann, Kelly Finnigan, Vince Guaraldi, She & Him, and more. We'll have additional holiday surprises and drinks, and some stocking stuffer giveaways too.

July 25: SoreThumbs ✨Side Quest✨ Market
SoreThumbs Side Quest Markets are a more curated and intimate event. Birthed from the idea of an “only ceramics market” from co-founder Jessie, the spirit of the Side Quest is embracing a theme or specific kind of art and giving a spotlight for it! We hope you’ll join us for SoreThumbs first ✨Side Quest✨ Market (doodle booths, live wheel spinning, live watercolor, and more!) at Dedo Coffee on July 25th, 2026 from 9 AM to 1 PM.

August - Save the Date!
1-year anniversary festivities the first week of August!

Community & Creative Folk Praise

Thanks to Budding Erica (https://www.instagram.com/buddingerica/) we're a month into our weekly fresh flower installation and we can't thank her enough for bringing these illuminating pieces to our space every Saturday morning. The power of flowers!

We welcomed Collectng Dust (https://www.instagram.com/collectngdust.vintage) and several vendors for a Hi-Fi Listening Market on June 6 and we're incredibly thankful for the music and vinyl they shared with us and the neighborhood.

Megan Lloyd (https://www.instagram.com/meganxelysephoto/) graced us with her portrait photography in an Analog Portrait Pop-Up and we can't wait to have her back. In the meantime, drop her a line if you're looking for something special for you and/or your small business or special event. The portraits are so good... 003 - Coffee for Listening

We're at the ten month mark in this neighborhood hi-fi listening cafe venture and as always, we thank our regulars and new visitors alike for crossing that threshold and seeking out our gentle little refuge off Pacific Ave. We promise to hold that space for you in the coming months even as we introduce a few new, experiential offerings. To that end, here’s some updates, save the dates, and things to look forward to in the coming weeks.

COFFEE & BRUNCH

Our Fri-Sat-Sun brunch (8:30 am - 12:30 pm) is kicking and while we’re taking it slow, we’re thrilled with the response and hope to bring on a few more of our long-anticipated items (brunch and lunch boards) without sacrificing our focus on coffee and hi-fi. And summer drinks coming in summer!

From our primary roaster, Unity Sourcing & Roasting (https://unity.coffee/) , we’re drinking a Don Jaime Gesha from Chalatenango, El Salvador at the moment, and tasting some super sweet summer melon and fruits. We kicked our last bag of Brilliant Fruits for filtered coffee, but we have a few remaining retail bags, along with our go-to Cloudscape and a few other rotating retail bags for the home brewers.

Starting in June we’ll feature an occasional rotating guest micro-roaster from Southern California(ish) and first up, we have Tomodachi Coffee Roasters (https://tomodachi.coffee/) . We’ll have their “Guava Candy” on filter in early June until sold out. Guava Candy is a washed thermal shock co-ferment from Huila, Colombia and producer Mario Fernando Gomez. You can read more about this coffee, origin, and producer here (https://tomodachi.coffee/products/guava-candy) . The roaster will be on hand June 13 at 10:00 am to share more about the coffee, roasting process, home brewing, and anything else folks want to know. We’ll also have a small supply of their retail bags in June until sold out.

MUSIC & LISTENING

May was an amazing listening month for us. Japanese electronic duo Satoshi & Makoto put out an album with Standart (https://standartmag.com/) . It sounds amazing and as Standart writers point out, it’s a “sonic expression of what coffee might sound like.” It’s on regular rotation in the cafe now but we featured it in a “music to coffee with” Sunrise Session last week. We highly recommend reading more about this album (https://standartmag.com/products/mirage-cafe-limited-edition-vinyl-lp?srsltid=AfmBOooQYXF5nTTAo_wvtOaUdORG5aITN0xGzHt8MT0kspF2tMUeUSyR) and specifically checking out an interview with the artists (https://standartmag.com/pages/interview-satoshi-makoto) . We also have a few Standart publications available for reading throughout the cafe and you’re welcome to explore that bookshelf while drinking a coffee.

In June, we have some music and listening event based programming, including a Hi-Fi Listening Market on June 6 with Collectng Dust Vintage and her amazing curated vinyl vendors. The twist? You can purchase everything you hear that day from a vendor. It’s an immersive experience.

We’ll also have our friend, neighbor, and amazing photographer, Megan, on hand for some affordable coffee and vinyl portraits inside the cafe. It’s an analog extravaganza! Your new portrait deserves to be with a cappuccino and a record.

MUSIC

Sunrise Sessions are going strong, and we have some special stickers for those who come to listen on Sunday mornings.

We're digging into Sarah's sister's stacks tomorrow (4/26) for some indie pop and UK garage from the aughts. You can follow us on Instagram to learn more about upcoming Sunrise Sessions. We hold them almost every Sunday, 7:30 - 9:30am, and focus on a particular genre or theme while asking folks to mindfully and actively listen for a moment.

Looking ahead, we're super excited for a few special music-oriented events in June. We can't share dates just yet but we'll make sure our next monthly-ish newsletter has all the details.

Sarah here. I’m co-owner of Dedo Coffee and a relatively private person, so this isn’t easy for me. We’re not exactly the kind of cafe that centers stories on ourselves — we care more about coffee, our team, the neighborhood, and sharing mindful and meaningful listening experiences with people.

And I don’t like being the “face” of anything although I recognize how much representation matters, and think about it constantly as a biracial, gender fluid person working in multiple white, male dominated spaces. Dedo Coffee isn’t my full time job. I’m privileged enough to make a living thinking, teaching, and writing about coffee and the environment, fertilizer and climate change, multi-species relations (birds!), and other super geeky but important things. I’m also trained to think critically about visual culture, representation, consent, and power. All of my work and teaching centers marginalized voices with a focus on care, and calling out appropriation and abuses of power. So here goes.

If you frequent our cafe, you may have noticed some changes happening on the patio. Our landlord unilaterally put an unapproved mural on our neighbor’s wall, placing OUR small business at risk. We believe it’s a Castle in the Sky tribute with some other representational issues that simply don’t speak to our cafe; we’re the only small business permitted to operate on site right now, and we have a contractual right to discuss and approve any changes to the patio. A landlord claiming to support small business doesn’t treat a small business like this. And a landlord claiming to support the neighborhood wouldn’t violate and ignore our rights.
