Every time you choose Ayara, you choose women-owned.

You choose two restaurant kids, one who grew up doing their elementary school homework in the dining room before the busy dinner rush, the other prepping for grad school between market runs.

You choose sisters who went off into the world, studying in New York, Connecticut, France, and Thailand, working in the most non-restaurant careers you can imagine (did you know Vanda worked for the UN?), restaurant jobs you very much can imagine (did you know Cathy did a stint at Mendocino Farms?), cooking and eating their ways through journeys that ultimately led them back here: to home.

You choose women who have taken the torch of restaurant ownership from their parents, who proudly cook the Thai Angeleno cuisine they want to, and who don’t take it for granted a single day that we love what we do and do what we love. Even in an industry not designed for us as women to excel.

So today, before Women’s History Month officially ends, thank you from Chef Vanda and Chef Cathy, from our parents Anna and Andy, and our brother Peter, for supporting Ayara Thai, and for being a part of our personal women’s history. 💚

Buckle up, friends. Chef Cathy is breaking down the misunderstanding between the Western and Eastern concepts of spice today, inspired by a disappointed guest who we’d love to fill in on our why. This one’s for you, Michelle!⁠

In the West, “spice” usually means something additive. 🌶️ In Thailand, spice is part of the balance of flavors (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy) all working together.⁠
⁠
Some dishes aren’t built to be dialed up or down because the spice isn’t a topping . . . it’s part of the architecture. Change the heat, and you change the soul of the dish. Also, you simply cannot always change the heat. Curry paste, for instance, is prepared in advance and can’t be altered in a single bowl. ⁠

Ummmmm, holy DM’s! This past weekend while we were cooking at the Art Fair in Santa Monica (more on that later), our messages were blowing up...because we’ve been keeping a secret, and the takeout is out of the bag! 🥡⁠

Our family is nothing if not (lovingly) competitive, so when the producers of Guy’s Grocery Games approached us about shooting a family episode of the show, it was an easy and automatic 𝘺𝘦𝘴! We brought our brother, Peter, out of restaurant hiding to join us sisters, and we put our skills of organizing, shopping, cooking, and team work to the test on the . For a few weeks before, we strategized and planned—we’re talking Kevin McCallister blueprints style—made tactical presumptions about the layout of the store and what the judges might ask of us, and in the end we’re so happy to (SPOILER ALERT) report that we took home the prize!🥇⁠

Our chef-led dinner series (hi, it’s Vanda and Cathy!👩🏻‍🍳👩🏻‍🍳) brings you behind the scenes for a shared evening of storytelling, getting your hands dirty (that’s right, we’ll have you participate in creating a portion of the meal!), and experiencing the flavors that shape LA from our POV as Thai American chefs. Named “a standout dish that reflects Andy’s upbringing” (here’s looking at you, Dad) by LA Times food critic Bill Addison, this dish started as a special and earned its place on our permanent menu nearly two years ago.⁠

𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘚𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘱 𝘗𝘢𝘥 𝘗𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘪: We make ours with succulent shrimp stir-fried in curry powder, chili paste, cream, egg, white onion, green onion, red bell pepper, and Chinese celery and served with your choice of jasmine or brown rice. 🍤 Though Thai cuisine is most often enjoyed family style, this is one you’ll be wanting to finish off yourself!

Thai food is actually an extraordinarily healthful cuisine because it’s balanced by design: noodles and rice provide energy, a mix of proteins provides fuel, high vegetable content provides fiber, and herbs aid in digestion and creating a varied gut biome . . . and that doesn’t even get into the micronutrient support. Somehow it does all that and still feels rich and comforting.⁠

We’re always the first to say the awards that mean the most to us are the local ones and the ones voted on or bestowed by our guests and community . . . but as 2025 comes to a close we’d be remiss to not acknowledge that recognitions like this matter too. ⁠

Being included in the for the sixth year in a row and receiving our Bib Gourmand in 2019 is something we hold with equal parts pride and perspective.
