Octoberfest is still going strong! Join in the festivities this Saturday at the Wild West Harley dealership. In addition to the music, the beer and brats provided by Wild West Harley, Maglio's will be there serving some other tasty German dishes. Wild West Harley is located at 5702 58th Street, Lubbock. The festivities start at 11 am. See you there!

It's happening this Sunday! Octoberfest at the Spirit Ranch, 701 Regis Street, Lubbock, Tx from 1-5 pm. Come out and join in the festivities. There will be live music, contests, vendors, beer and food.

Pumpernickel, deriving from Germanic roots where Pumpern was a synonym for being flatulent and nickel was a form of Nicholas, commonly associated with a goblin or devil. Loosely translated, pumpernickel means "farting devil" or "devil's fart". It has also been suggested that the word pumpernickel was slangily used to describe a person of unrefined manners. (a farting Nick) The association may be that this form of rye bread, typically heavy and slightly sweet was traditional peasant fare. We feel that we cannot celebrate Octoberfest without offering a grilled ham and cheese sandwich on Pumpernickel. Ask to have it made with sauerkraut to give your sandwich a little more of that German flair. We promise not to label you a "farting Nick"!

Around 1949, post war, a woman from Berlin used her resources to trade booze to the British in exchange for their ketchup, English curry spice and Worcestershire sauce. Her creation of adding curry and other spices to ketchup to dress up their sausages became what is now the most popular street food in Germany. Maglio's has created their own version of this currywurst and will be serving it with fries for you to satisfy your curiosity. Come check us out on Sunday, October 9th, at the Spirit Ranch for their 2nd annual Octoberfest celebration.

Wiesn Hendl
In Munich, the word for Octoberfest is Wiesn, and the Bavarian word for chicken is Hendl. This chicken dish that has been slowly roasted in a buttery sauce is a very popular dish in the beer gardens during Octoberfest. In fact, there are just as many chickens eaten as sausages during this festival. Maybe this is the brainchild for our habit of eating an order of wings at our favorite bar today. Beer and chicken just go together. Maglio's will be offering this traditional meal as a half chicken with German potato salad and red cabbage.....wing included.

Black Forest Cake
It is assumed that this cake was named after the Black Forest mountain range in southwestern Germany. But this cake was actually named after the specialty liquor of that region. Kirsch is a liquor that is distilled from the Morello cherry. At it's inception, chocolate was being added to cake batters for the first time making way for the unique flavors of this classic cake. While there have been many adaptations in the recipe throughout the years, this cake is still a German favorite. We will serve our rendition at the Octoberfest celebration happening at the Spirit Ranch on Sunday, October 9th and invite everyone to come join in the fun!

Rouladen
One of Germany's most famous and delicious dishes. Rouladen are beef roulades fill with bacon, onions, mustard, and pickles, then browned and simmered in gravy. Come out to the Spirit Ranch on October 9th and give this dish a try. We will be serving it with a potato dumpling and red cabbage.
