🌊 Meet the Chesapeake Bay’s "Straightened-Out Seahorses"! 🐟 Did you know the Bay is home to the incredible Northern Pipefish? We are catching a lot of these as we are harvesting our oysters in the Patuxent River. These slender little guys are actually close relatives of seahorses, encased in protective bony rings of armor instead of scales. 😲 Even cooler? They completely reverse traditional parenting roles! Females court the males and deposit eggs into a specialized brood pouch on the male’s belly. The dad then fertilizes and carries the babies, providing placenta-like nutrients until they hatch! They are master mimics, using their straw-like snouts to vacuum up tiny shrimp while perfectly blending into underwater grass beds. 🦐

We got so many requests for MORE PUFFERFISH! 🐟 So here are some close ups and a couple interesting facts. They can grow up to 14 inches 📏 and reach up to 1.5 pounds. 🪨 They are found from Canada to Florida and have been found in waters up to 600ft deep. 🌊 When feeding, they are capable of flipping over blue crabs with a jet of water to attack their vulnerable undersides! 🦀 Check the comments for a video and like this post if you want to see more of what we catch!

✨ 🦪 Are you as happy about the oyster season being here as this northern pufferfish? Every October we catch a few of these in the oyster tongs. A native species to the Chesapeake Bay, they are also known as sugar toads or blow toads. Although not poisonous, they possess a strong beak-like mouth with four fused teeth that help these omnivores feed on a wide range of crunchy foods. 🦪 ✨

🦀 🦪 With September here this crab sent us a friendly reminder that oyster season is 21 days away. If you look below its right eye you can see a baby oyster or spat that was released probably in late June or early July. This is a good sign for the oyster population and we are hoping for a plentiful season! Stay tuned for oyster updates! 🦀 🦪

🦀 Our last post talked about the rarity of a crab lacking normal pigment due to easy predation. 🌈 Yesterday we caught two more crabs showing signs of this in the same day. One was a female peeler and the other a male hard crab. We don't catch them every season, but from our experience when we do it is usually multiple in that season. 🦀

🦀 Here we have a peeler crab with a genetic defect that blocks the normal mottled olive-green, brown pigment pathways to part of its back fin. This is not known as a full albino crab but instead a leucistic crab which retains partial color. 🌈

💥 No, this crab was not caught near the nuclear power plant or on the Potomac. It is a rare but natural occurrence. 💥

✨ We wanted to highlight how unique this crab was because of the pink line that allows us to determine it is a peeler and will go through the molting process, is extremely highlighted. Crabs with this genetic mutation are rare because it removes their camouflage and exposes them to predators more easily. ✨

Here are three more examples of these crabs we have caught. We have one with a mostly white claw from 2016. One with a claw, legs and partial fin from 2018, and another with a white claw from 2022.🦀

😲 🦀 Blue crabs are very resilient creatures. When they get injured they can heal the wound or regrow its lost appendage the next time it molts. This soft crab proves that by surviving without a corner of her shell through the molting process, sporting her scar like it's no big deal. An adult female blue crab can molt up to 20 times in her lifetime. How many times do you think she has molted with this neat defect? Drop your guesses in the comments! 🦀 😲

🌙 ☀️ ⏰ This time of year at Swamp Dog Seafood we are running on very little sleep due to softshell season. It takes round the clock dedication and constant vigilance every few hours to ensure a perfect product. ⏰ ☀️ 🌙

✨ That being said it never gets old watching crabs go through the molting process for the umpteenth time. 😲 As we feel exhausted, we can only imagine how the crab feels after such an ordeal! ✨

🦀 Watch to the end to see this 7.5" monster soft crab blink! 🦀
