The Malingerers are our Sunday Music open mic feature at the Walnut St Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St, Lynn MA. this Sunday 7/19/2026.
First brought to life in an Everett basement in the summer of 2012 by two original malingerers, the late, great drummer George Kelley and current member Roger Jermyn, The Malingerers are an alternative rock band specializing in music George so succinctly stated: “normal people hate.” Currently, the Boston-based band features Peter Carr on bass, Donovan Jermyn on drums, and Roger Jermyn on guitar and vocals. The band has had multiple appearances at the Walnut Cafe, The Tavern At The End of the World, Medford Porchfest, Swampscott Porchfest, as well as appearing at PA’s Lounge ( now Union Sq Tavern), The Barn, and the Everett Auditorium. They play a mix of “left of the dial” covers and originals that harken back to the glory days of the great college and alternative rock stations of the ’80s and ’90s: WMBR, WFMO, WZBC, WFNX, etc. Music from The Replacements, Joy Division, The Fall, Wire, Minutemen, Ramones, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, Guided By Voices, Hüsker Dü, Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt, as well as selections from local alternative legends Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, and Buffalo Tom populate their personal vinyl as well as their set lists. When not shaking the foundations of their practice space in Waltham, they enjoy a nice cup of herbal tea, double rainbows, and long walks on the beach

Kali is a q***r poet in Salem, MA. Her poetry has appeared in journals and anthologies, and been nominated for Pushcart prizes and Best of the Net. Her first collection, Pelted by Flowers, was named a “Must Read” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Big Band Night at the Good Life Bar is her second full-length collection. She earned an MFA at Vermont College of Fine Arts, 2015.

Tim Foley is our Sunday Music open mic feature at the Walnut St Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St, Lynn MA. this Sunday 7/12/2026.
Tim is a songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist
whose sound doesn’t settle easily into a descriptive box.
You’ll hear an amalgamation of musical styles he has
gravitated towards, which include blues, jazz, folk,
classical, and funk. Tim lived in New Orleans for a
number of years, and his music is heavily influenced by
the city’s tradition of musical experimentation. His
songs, featuring solo guitar and combo instrumentals as
well as with vocals, range from upbeat foot stompers to
relaxing melodic soundscapes.
Tim’s third album, “Street Dog” with the Tim Foley
Group, to be released in November 2026, presents 10
original electric-funk-jazz-blues songs, penned from his
time in New Orleans.

Lee Eric Freedman is our Speakup feature this Wed 7/8/2026, in person at the Walnut Street Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St., Lynn MA.
Lee is the 3rd Poet Laureate of Swampscott, Massachusetts, United States (2016-2018). Since 2011, he’s been affectionately entitled as the Renegade Poet Laureate of Swampscott (2011- Forever). When Lee isn’t busy being any type of Laureate, he leads the Tin Box Poets of Swampscott Workshop Group, co-hosts the online video podcast series In Other Words with his friend and SpoFest founder James Bryant, and regularly performs at open-mics and readings all over the place. Lee has been published in numerous poetry anthologies and journals, including publications from Netherlands, Ireland, India, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Scotland. In March of 2025, Lee’s poetry was published in the Vagabond Lunar Collection Anthology (Vagabond Books) that was included in the Lunar Codex Project and which landed on the moon aboard the Intuitive Machines / NASA Nova-C Lunar Lander Athena. His latest chapbook, coauthored with Sourav Sarkar, is “Poems” (2024, Cooch Behar Books). Lee is the former host of First Friday Open Mic at ReachArts, Swampscott, his poetry’s been translated into American Sign Language, and he’s a three-time winner of the Naomi Cherkofsky Memorial Poetry Contest. Paul Senn is our Sunday Music open mic feature at the Walnut St Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St, Lynn MA. this Sunday 7/5/2026.
Paul is a Mental Health Counselor who brings his work into his
artistic life through a unique combination of spoken word, musical
textures , videos, storytelling , poetry and song. His work has been published in the Journal Dissent, and his poems are included in Bouquet of Stars, a collection assembled by mystic poet Chelan Harkin, available on Amazon . Themes of personal growth and social commentary ripple through Paul's work. Paul's current projects includes exploring use of music and storytelling to help bring Americans together, and jamming with his musical comrades some of whom may make surprise appearances feature night! Paul's music is available on Spotify and Facebook under the handle Approximately Paul. The current version of Paul does not like hazelnut coffee. He does however enjoy the Turkey on Wheat special at the Walnut. What more needs to be said?

Danielle Jones is our Speakup feature this Wed 7/1/2026, in person at the Walnut Street Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St., Lynn MA.
Danielle Jones is a poet, artist, and educator, with over a decade of experience in arts administration. She holds an MFA from UMass Boston. Her work has appeared in Beloit Poetry Journal, Best New Poets, Consequence Magazine, Incessant Pipe, Memorious, Southern Poetry Review, Rattle, and elsewhere. She is a recipient of a Rona Jaffe Writer’s Award, a St. Botolph’s Club Emerging Artist Award, a Mass Cultural Council Artist Fellowship, and a Brother Thomas Foundation Fellowship. Her first collection of poetry, Hunger, was published by Bordighera Press last fall. Danielle teaches writing at the University of New Hampshire, where she directs the Nossrat Yassini Poetry Festival and manages YAS Press.

Kirsten Manville is our Sunday Music open mic feature at the Walnut St Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St, Lynn MA. this Sunday 6/28/2026.
Kirsten is a Boston-based performing songwriter who engages audiences with melodic and lyric-focused Americana music, with a touch of blues. Kirsten paints pictures and tells stories, capturing the ups, downs and in-betweens of everyday life. Vulnerable in some places and unapologetic in others, the songs have an authenticity that binds them together as a cohesive collection. Incorporating elements of folk, country, and blues, she has developed a sound that draws from her influences and yet is uniquely her own. Kirsten's songs debuted in the Top 50 of the Roots Music Report Folk Album, Contemporary Folk Album, and Contemporary Folk Songs Charts, as well as on the June 2022 Folk Alliance Chart. Kirsten performs regularly in the northeast, and has had the honor of opening for well-known folk artists Don White, Joe Jencks, Kerri Powers, as well as humorist Jimmy Tingle.

M.P. Carver is a poet and visual artist from Salem, MA. She is Director of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, miCrO-Founder of Molecule: a tiny lit mag, and teaches at Salem State University. Her work has been published in Rattle, Mantis, and Nixes Mate, among others. She has received funding or fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Essex Community Foundation, the T.S. Eliot Foundation, and Disquiet International. In2022 her poem “You & God & I” was awarded the New England Poetry Club’s E.E. Cummings Prize. Her chapbook, Selachipmorpha, was published by Incessant Pipe in 2015, and a chapbook with Lily Poetry Review Books, Hard Up, is available now. More at mpcarver.com.

From Nora:
Music has always been a huge part of my life, starting with piano lessons and singing out of my mom's old songbooks. After singing in high school chorus I switched to singing with records ((I'm old) and the radio then cassettes, cds and streaming music.. I am grateful to my husband who got me interested in playing the guitar which led to song writing. I am thrilled to have found the North Shore open mic community. I love the creative outlet that local spots like the Walnut Street Cafe provide. A huge thanks goes out to hosts Dave and Roger for keeping the music going.

Angela Masciale is our Speakup feature this Wed 6/17/2026, in person at the Walnut Street Coffee Cafe, 157 Walnut St., Lynn MA.
Angela is a published Poet, Singer-Songwriter Guitarist and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Her poetry has been included in over eighty published anthologies over the last three years. She also has a book of poetry that she shares with Sourav Sarkar of Cooch Behar, India. This book contains six poems written about her trip to France in 2024. Angela has a second book also shared by Sourav Sarkar of poems inspired by her travels to India--she is a world traveler with her husband and often writes about her experiences of various cultures, awe of natural beauty encountered and excitement of urban settings from the countries visited. Her poems capture precious spirited moments of inspired by communion in nature. She has performed her music in many venues in NYC and Massachusetts including Club Passim, Worcester First Night, Mee and Thee Coffeehouse, North Reading Coffeehouse, Roslindale Open mic features, Marblehead Festival of Arts, Peace Festival in Rockport, Ma, Catbird Café and many others. This is a return visit as a feature to Walnut Street Café as both a musician as well as poet. She has three CD’s of original songs, “Time Will Tell”, “Ancient Voices” and “Take Back the Land”. She has had radio play and some live performances over the years at MIT, WATD, The River, WUMB, Tufts University radio, RPI radio in NY. Her CD’s are available online and she has recorded many you-tubes of original songs and selected covers which are also online. Her lyrics are poetic and her songs have universal themes, healing messages, depictions of nature, mystical and spiritual themes and sometimes political statements. Angela has a three octave range to her voice which some have described as folk-classical. Her musical style is influenced by Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins. She has also mastered a set of jazz classics. In addition, she does singing bowl chants of Tibetan, Hindu, Native American and Gregorian- Mystical.
