“Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another.” —Seth Godin

Happy birthday to the marketing GOAT, Seth Godin, born on this day (July 10) in 1960.

Seth W. Godin, also known under his pen name as “F. X. Nine,” is an American author, marketing expert, entrepreneur, and a former dot-com business executive. He and Mark Hurst co-founded Yoyodyne, a permission marketing company named after the fictional Yoyodyne in “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.”

Yoyodyne, launched in 1995, used contests, online games, and scavenger hunts to market companies to participating users. In 1998, he sold Yoyodyne to Yahoo! for $29.6 million and became Yahoo's vice president of direct marketing.

In March 2006, Godin launched Squidoo. By July 2008, Squidoo had become one of the 500 most visited sites in the world. In 2014, it was sold to HubPages.

He’s written more than 20 books, which have been translated into many languages.

“Marion ended up being much more than a stop between destinations. There was enough to keep us exploring from morning until evening, and we’d gladly go back to do it again.”

McDowell County = mostly mountains. ✅ That is correct! That’s why Marion is “where Main Street meets the mountains.” Come and see us, y’all! OPEN 1-9PM.

Nobody Wants to Admit They Live in the Piedmont. Looking at You, Valdese, North Carolina. 👀

There are two things folks in Valdese will tell you before you've finished introducing yourself.

They're from Valdese.

And they live in the mountains.

Well... about that.

According to the state of North Carolina, Valdese is in the Piedmont. Only the western tip of Burke County is actually in the Mountains. That's why the town has always been described as where the Piedmont meets the Mountains.

Meets.

Not becomes.

Now I get it. Nobody wakes up hoping somebody calls their hometown "Piedmont." It doesn't have the same ring to it. "Mountain town" sounds like waterfalls, trout streams, and cabins. "Piedmont town" sounds like a place where the exit has three mattress stores and a Tractor Supply.

So over the years, somewhere along the way, the foothills just started introducing themselves as the mountains and everybody sort of nodded along.

Sorry.

Mountain views? Absolutely.

Mountain backdrop? Yep.

Mountain neighbors? Sure.

Actually in the mountains? Not quite.

Y'all are mountain adjacent. The waiting room for Western North Carolina. Close enough to claim the scenery, but still officially Piedmont.

We'll be praying for y'all. 😄
