It’s taken a couple of weeks to fully reorganize the used section, but it’s done (for now)! New dedicated genre shelves, and lots of new titles from storage that we previously had no room for. We also have a whole shelf just for used kids books now! Find it next to our wonderful local author section.

Last April, I got hit with an idea I couldn’t let go of. I was sitting at one of my two jobs wondering why my college town didn’t have a bookstore, and thought, “Why don’t I open my own?” My coworkers watched in horror as I began looking at vacant building spaces in town and doing the math on startup costs.

I started posting market research surveys in all of our local farmer’s market groups and college forums to gauge interest, and when it seemed like people really wanted a book cafe in Maryville, I quit my job of seven years to go all in.

The Kickstarter was my final test—if I could successfully crowdfund some of the startup expenses my savings wouldn’t cover, then it was meant to be. And in August, I hit my goal.

The following months were difficult. I had to say goodbye to three of my grandparents over a six month period while finishing grad school and opening a new business. There were a few delays and many tears involved, but in December, I opened the doors to Plot Twist Cafe.

It’s been a little over six months since that opening day, and despite the external difficulties, the bookstore has been a dream come true. I have learned so much about our wonderful community and about running a business in these past months. PTC is growing steadily, and I’m hitting the goals I’ve set for myself. I finally feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be.

Thank you all who have followed and supported me from the start of this journey, and thank you to everyone who gives PTC a chance. I can’t wait for what the next months bring. I have so many ideas, and so much enthusiasm heading into the future. And with my English MA complete, all I have is time.
