Road construction for Phase 2 of the Route 151 Corridor Improvement Project finished for the summer at the end of June, according to the Town of Mashpee website. Although the road work has paused, numerous businesses along Route 151 still feel the impact. The road work extends from the completed Phase 1 area—approximately 900 feet west of the Old Barnstable Road intersection to the Mashpee Rotary—to the Mashpee-Falmouth line. Shoulder work will continue through Labor Day with “no traffic impacts,” the town’s website says. White Lion Baking Company owner Elizabeth D. Miles said that is “absolute bull.”

“It is still chaotic and confusing,” Miles said. “July and August are how we make it through the rest of the year. The combination of the economy with this road work is just frustrating. I have talked to everyone else over here. It is all of us.”

White Lion Baking Company has been at 439 Nathan Ellis Highway for 13 years. Miles said the bakery’s sales have dropped tremendously compared to last year, and that the road construction was at the root of the dip.

“When people do come in, almost all of them say, ‘I have not been here because of the road work, because I do not want to sit in traffic,’” Miles said. “And then the next question is, ‘Is this impacting your sales?’ I am like, ‘Well, yes, because all of you are saying the same thing.’”
