Apparently, I’ve reached that stage in life where I have absolutely no idea how teenagers communicate anymore. 😂

Meet Sophie… better known around here as “Flash.” (State champ for a reason. If you blink, she’s already on the other side of the restaurant.)

Every time she comes into work, she has her own way of saying hello.

It’s not a handshake…
It’s not a high-five…
It’s not a fist bump…

It’s some kind of one-legged, peace-sign, half-karate, half-dance move that I’m pretty sure only Gen Z understands.

Meanwhile…

Kiersten and I have perfected communication without saying a single word.

No smile.
No handshake.
No hug.

Just… The Nod.

One look.

If the nod is quick, it’s going to be a good day.

If it’s slow with a sigh… we already know we’re in survival mode.

No words are needed. The facial expression says everything.

So today one of our servers (who also happens to be a school teacher) decided it would be a great idea to make me take a picture with Flash.

The result?

It looks like a confused Italian restaurant owner trying to figure out Gen Z while a teenager is wondering why I make everything so awkward. 😂

Forty years in the restaurant business, and I’m still learning a new language…

🌞 Summer Update from the Teen Drama Department… 🌞

People always ask me, “How do you survive working with all those high school kids?”

The answer?

I honestly have no idea. 😂

Summer is supposed to be the time when these kids work MORE so the rest of us can actually take a day off once in a while.

Instead…

Kiersten—my so-called “personal assistant”—finally comes back from vacation… just in time for the heat wave. She also comes in with two other girls. I’m thinking she’s bringing them in for job interviews, nope.! “ we came to have lunch cause we were hanging out by the pool” 🤨🤨

You’d think she’d come back refreshed and ready to work.

Nope.

Within five minutes she’s already complaining about how hot it is… and somehow she’s already planning ANOTHER vacation.

AND Then there’s Ryan…

Now, to be fair, it is HOT in the kitchen.😂

So when I couldn’t find him, I went looking…

Where do you think I found him?

1st time Sitting on a bucket… inside the walk-in FREEZER… and 2nd time then parked directly in front of TWO fans like he is modeling for a photo shoot… drinking water like he’d just crossed the Sahara Desert.

I asked him what the hell are you doing.

His response?

“I’m trying not to melt.”

I almost left him in there two alphabetically organize all the food. 😂

And as if that wasn’t enough…

We’re about to lose our newest crew member, Emily (aka Becks), for 6–8 weeks while she recovers from a torn ACL. We’re all wishing her a speedy recovery! ❤️

Shayla’s?! on vacation…

Shopie?! (Have no idea where she is)

Jackson and his brother aka Tucker are over there gallivanting across Europe—London, Paris… probably eating croissants while I’m over here making pizzas.

The best part?

They come home… YEAH!!!! work for TWO DAYS, BOOM

…and then they’re off on ANOTHER vacation.

Meanwhile…

I’m over here wondering if I accidentally hired restaurant employees or travel influencers.

I swear… this crew may drive me and Carlo absolutely insane…

But I wouldn’t trade these knuckleheads for anything.

(Well… maybe if Ryan would stop hiding in the freezer.) 😂🍕❄️

🚨🚨 WE ARE OPEN! After the storm that ripped through our area, we wanted to let everyone know that Palumbo Pizza is OPEN today on a very limited menu.

The truth is, we weren’t even supposed to be open today. We made the decision to open because we knew so many people are without power and needed a hot meal.

Please remember that many of our employees are dealing with the same challenges you are. Some have no electricity at home, some have storm damage, and yet they still came in to serve our community.

We’re doing everything we can with a limited staff, a limited menu, and hundreds of people coming through our doors all at once. We ask for one thing in return: a little patience and kindness.

We completely understand that everyone is frustrated by the storm, but taking that frustration out on our staff isn’t fair. They’re working as hard as they can to help everyone.

Thank you to the many customers who have been patient, understanding, and supportive today. It truly means more than you know.

We’ll continue serving as many people as we can. Thank you for bearing with us, and please stay safe.
