History Lesson for Me-Part 2 of 2
LoVinas Braids - Owner Lovina

➡️Gifty thought I was from Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda (Tutsi), The Gambia, or Ethiopia based on certain facial features she personally associated with people she has known throughout her life.

💙After knowing Gifty and Paula for a little over a year and a half, it was fun to finally hear where they thought I was from… when we first met. These are two women who have become genuine friends during my transition from Memphis back home to Illinois, and I’m so grateful for them.

🤎One thing that has touched my heart is the kindness I’ve experienced here. Through six months of working in this state, I’ve met hundreds of people, and I never had to ask anyone for help. Instead, people would simply ask if they could bless my children or me with something to make our transition a little easier as we got back on our feet.

💛That kind of generosity is something I’ll never take for granted. I’m incredibly thankful for the friendships, encouragement, and kindness God has placed in my path.

History Lesson in the salon, Part 1 of 2
LoVinas Braids - Owner Lovina

🩷One of the coolest experiences I had while getting my hair braided was listening to the women try to guess where in Africa they thought my ancestry might be.

☀️The owner is Nigerian. One braider is from the Congo, another is from Ghana, and another is from Togo. As they braided my hair, they studied my facial features, bone structure, nose, eyes, and face shape—not just my skin tone. Based on what they had grown up seeing in different parts of Africa, they began making their best guesses.

💙They wondered if I was Ethiopian, Ghanaian, Nigerian, or Rwandan/Tutsi. One even thought I might be Fulani (Fula/Peul).

💙She explained that the Fulani are one of the largest and most widespread ethnic groups in Africa, living across countries like Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Burkina Faso. Historically, many Fulani traveled across the Sahel with their cattle, becoming known for their adaptability, resilience, and long-distance trade networks.

📍She also shared that Fulani women are often admired for their elegance, dignity, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and strong family values. Many people associate traditional Fulani beauty with features like long oval faces, high cheekbones, almond-shaped eyes, and slender facial features—though, like every ethnic group, there is tremendous diversity in appearance.

🇨🇩 I just thought it was fascinating that before they knew anything about my background, they were trying to piece together my ancestry simply from my features.

🇳🇬In the end, they learned that my roots are Igbo from Nigeria.

🔥Whether their guesses were right or wrong, I loved hearing the conversations and learning about the incredible diversity across Africa. It turned an ordinary hair appointment into a cultural experience I’ll never forget. 🩷🌍

Took me time to accept this after I filed for divorce. I had to accept I was only ever a placeholder. I learned I was hated. He only wanted control & access over my body, time, resources, talents, skills and accomplishments to publicly claim as his own. I lived, learned and now make better choices. All the things I wanted in a husband, I simply provide to & for myself. 😍

Side hustle on 10! 🤭

I never planned on becoming a content creator—I just enjoy sharing little pieces of my life. But you’ll never hear me telling anyone I’m a content creator. I like to be called a Video Storyteller from my Radio, Television & Film degree.

In November 2025, I realized that if I was already posting places I visited, I might as well write a quick TikTok review when they sent the notification. It takes less than two minutes to copy, paste, and add a few photos or videos I post here.

I only average about 4 reviews a month, but they recently hit 3,000 total views and even helped cover my car payment this month. I’ll take it! 😊 Every little extra stream of income adds up.

This is a post for other women leaving a marriage, when they try to take everything from you, God will use your talents and gifts to make a way out of no way. 🩷

And the air quality is STILL atrocious! 🤬

Anyone else having breathing or throat problem? I’m going to have to take someone to the doctor tomorrow.

Moving back home to Illinois has been such a blessing, especially because I get to be close to my best friend of 26 years—the family I chose. 🩷 I love how you walk into every room comfortable in your own skin and make everyone feel seen, loved, and supported. I’m so grateful to have you in my life. Love you always, Malinda. 🫶🏾

🖤 Part 2 of 2 🖤

This was one of the four blouses my mom gifted me when I was 19 years old. It took me over 30 years to finally wear it, and tonight felt like the perfect moment. At 49 and a mom of two, I’ve always loved aging and feel more & more alive each year.💖

There’s something about accomplishing major goals, watching my business grow, and building the life I’ve prayed for. It changes you from the inside out. You carry yourself differently—with confidence, femininity, sensuality, and a deep sense of gratitude for the woman you’ve become.

More than anything, I’ve fallen in love with who I am and what I bring to the table—for myself, my children, and the people I love.💗
