Hey everybody, it’s gonna be hot! And it’s a perfect week for ice cream! My family and I are in Georgia this week to  move my oldest daughter for college. Go DAWGS! We had some excellent young people step up to cover the ice cream shop while we are gone. We just ask for your patience this week as these hard-working kids are still learning. I’m so thankful they wanted to help us out so our family could make this trip. Again we just appreciate your patience this week and apologize for any errors. We can’t wait to be back. The 17th makes one year since we opened!!! Once we get back from Georgia we will plan something special for our 1 year Anniversary! Thank you all for your support!

As we gear up for the block party celebrating 250 years this Saturday, I want to take a minute and share the history I have learned about the Irwin House since becoming the owner. Archibald Irwin finished building this log house in 1792 making it 234 years old! Archibald Irwin’s father James Irwin was a Scottish Irish immigrant who came to Pennsylvania in 1729 with seven other Irwins from the Glencoe County Antrim Northern Ireland area. The Irwins operated mills, a bleaching plant and a smith shop back in Ireland. James Irwin in 1748 owned 540 acres in Peters Twp. just north of present day Mercersburg, Pennsylvania.
During the Revolutionary War, Archibald Irwin's oldest son, James began to do commissary duty for the Western Army at Irwinton's Mills. James Irwin organized pack horse trains to carry flour, meat and other provisions to Pittsburgh for the Western Army.
Large numbers of beef cattle were driven to Irwinton's plantation to be purchased, slaughtered and processed in a recently erected slaughter house, and sent to the Western Armies.
Archibald Irwin died in 1798 and the plantation was given to his youngest son, Archibald Irwin II.
Archibald Irwin's oldest daughter, Jane, married William Henry Harrison, Jr., son of the General and President William Henry Harrison, at Irwinton Mills in 1824. Jane Irwin Harrison acted as the First Lady of the White House for one month during the brief administration of the first President Harrison in 1841. Archibald Irwin's daughter, Elizabeth, married John Scott Harrison and was the mother of Benjamin Harrison,the 23rd President of the United States.
This building was almost lost in a fire in 2003 but thanks to borough council members and the Flannery’s the property was restored and rebuilt to its beautiful state today.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of meeting decedents of Archibald Irwin. I was informed that the Irwin’s are known for their strong women and strong men. They are a proud family. It was such a blessing to meet these lovely ladies and to know I am the care taker of The Irwin House and its legacy. This is the beauty of a small historic town!
