5,000 People attend the Stamm House 100th Anniversary in 1947!

This super interesting article was published in the Cap Times on Sept 29, 1947. The celebration lasted two days and featured a parade with 48 floats depicting different historical elements of the Stamm House history. Walter Bubbert was a direct descendent of one of the owners and spoke. His family ran the Bubbert general store before it was the Stamm House and his father was born in the building! (This would be the from the era of the 1925 photo we have). The article says he shared a lot of stories - how I wish we could have a copy of that speech!

This picture of the Stamm House was from 1947. The Stamm House was painted and spruced up for the celebration. Notice the dog at the front door.

Enjoy the rest of the article. Thanks for the Middleton Historical Society for sharing it with us in 2013-

Stamm House 2013!

The deeper I go into the records, the more I find!

Yes, I believe Stamm House's upstairs looked like this from potentially the 1970's until we renovated it. This is the Sweeney era, and I had the privilege to get to know Jim a little before he passed. What a nice guy! And he loved the Stamm House and all the memories he had there with his family working along side him. You can't ask much more than that.

One of the unique things they had was an elevator lift that allowed drinks to be delivered upstairs from the downstairs bar. I was told they made it from a garage door opener. It worked pretty well and that is one thing we should have kept.

We salvaged all the paneling and other wood. Some was used to panel the storeroom downstairs off the cave. The rest was used in the renovation of the historic Matt's House in Verona. The light fixtures are still in my basement waiting for a home. A very crafty fellow bought all the shutters, both inside and out. I wonder what happened to all those.

The floors are the same, we just sanded them up -

Any chance anyone has old pics from Stamm House? We'd love to post them for everyone else to see as well!

Century Ave and the Stamm House in the 1940's from the air!

I've been nostalgically going back through our archives and found this aerial pic, which I think is from the 1940's or so, based on the car on the road. Stamm House is on the left side, bottom half of the pic. Everything else would be going west.

When we were working on the building, we had a super interesting elderly woman stop by and tell us some stories about growing up near the Stamm House. She said she used to sled down Century Ave with her brothers and sisters when she was a kid. In 2014, she was in her 90's so, that would have been a while ago. Century Ave was a really quiet road back then, she said. It is super interesting to see how Stamm House went from being in a more rural area to pretty urban now.

Any chance anyone has any old pics of Stamm House lying around? We'd really love to see them -

For the history buffs out there, I thought you might find these pics interesting. I was going through some files and found some pics of Stamm House that show it at its most basic state. It is 2014 and we have all the layers of paneling and parging out that have been put on over the years. We also have removed 3 drop ceilings and have it back to its original height. The last time it looked like this was in the 1840's when it was built.

It took a lot of work to get to this point. From a basic work standpoint, it was actually harder taking all the old stuff out than actually adding new systems. I don't remember how many dumpsters it took to get to this point but it was a lot. I do remember we hauled away 8 tons of parging (a soft concrete) that covered the stone that I took off with a rotary hammer that winter. My shoulders got so big that winter that none of my suits would fit anymore!

I hope you enjoy these - let me know if you have any questions - Troy

We’d really like to send a big shout out to Middleton High School and MHS teacher Justin Zander for promoting the trades in Middleton and making a difference in kid’s lives. As a product of a great high school shop class experience, I can honestly say that the Stamm House would not have been restored by me without those experiences.

I did the odd thing of doing both college and the trades and both have been fundamental in my career so I don’t want this to come off as me judging one path as better than the other. It’s just super nice to see the trades being given the respect they deserve and giving kids the chance to experience the satisfaction of this kind of work early on. Nice job Justin and Middleton High!!

The History of the Neon Sign!

When we were doing research for redoing the Stamm House 12 years ago, the old pics with the neon sign intrigued us. How cool was that sign!

In the long history of the Stamm House, the neon sign was old but obviously not as old as the building. Our oldest pic of SH is 1925 and it isn’t there. But by 1947, it is. And by the 1970’s it disappears.

It actually may have been the original neon sign that proclaimed the building as the Stamm House, as SH has not always been called by this name. Heine and Marie Fuller probably were the first to put up the original neon sign and probably named the building Stamm House, after the German word “stammtisch”, which means “regular’s table”. Heine was a German WW I aircraft mechanic and immigrated here after the war. There was a large German immigrant community in Pheasant Branch at the time.

We petitioned the city to allow us to recreate it and they let us. We then had to find someone to do it for us. We found Neon Lab in Madison and they got a kick out of doing it. They made the whole metal cabinet by hand and hand-painted it . They also bent all the glass by hand. It was all made old-school.

Interestingly, Neon Lab could tell the actual colors of the neon from the black and white photos based on the date and what colors were available then. It was red and white.

Installation day was super fun and we were really excited to see how it looked at night. I remember Jim and I came out on the patio after turning it on for the first time as were really worrried. Had we recreated the “Kenny Roger’s Chicken” episode from Seinfeld?! (Check it out on YouTube if you haven’t seen it!) The sign sure seemed bright and it reflected off the new shiny patio and fresh spring snow. Were we in trouble?!

The light level ended up being fine and we now celebrate 10 years of the new neon sign. To me, the neon sign has been a wonderful memorial to the one of the distinct, different histories of the Stamm House. In a building like this, we are just caretakers for our time. I’m sure SH meant just as much to all the previous generations of owners and patrons as it does to all of us.

So next time you are here, maybe toast the sign and thank Heine and Marie. They helped preserve our history -

10 years in, the maple tree looks great!

When we received permission to build our patio, we knew we had to figure out how to soften the relationship between the building and Century Ave. We looked at the old photos and found there had always been lots of trees up until the nature of Pheasant Branch turned from rural to urban.

But could a tree survive in this environment? The maple is essentially a potted plant, because it is surrounded by many layers of concrete. We took inspiration from the UW Memorial Union Terrace and other CCC Park projects and came up with the idea that we have now.

The maple tree is a technically a celebration maple, which is a hybrid between a silver maple and a red maple. A silver maple is kind of a scrappy, weedy variety that can survive a lot. A red maple is a more majestic tree with beautiful red leaves in the fall.

I think the celebration maple is a great symbol of the Stamm House and our crew. We are a scrappy crew that has survived a lot and really want to be here for a long time!

I love the maple tree and it makes me happy to see it every time I’m here. We never knew if it would survive. Now I can’t imagine the Stamm House without the tree.

We sure appreciate all your loyalty and look forward to seeing you soon!
