Happy New Year!! It’s been a while, but sometimes you stumble upon a place you just need to tell people about. That happened today at a little place called Lucy’s Luncheonette.
Lucy’s is located at 749 Saybrook Rd in Middletown. Their claim to fame is sourdough bread, which is why we went. The display case was filled with sourdough, baguettes, loaves of bread, as well as several varieties of muffins. They also have a breakfast and lunch menu with many choices. Today, we ordered a simple ham and cheese with lettuce and tomato on a baguette. Now, you know my philosophy of the bread makes the sandwich. This was the case today. It could have been just plain bread and butter and it would have been fantastic. The simple hame and cheese was elevated by the crispy, crusty delicious roll it came on. While I was paying, I overheard the owner say she was taking hot cinnamon rolls out of the oven. Of course we got one. I couldn’t put into words how good it was. They have been open for 2 months. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Let’s hope they are around for a long time.
So if you find yourself driving around Middletown and want to satisfy your hunger (and sweet tooth), run to this little place called Lucy’s Luncheonette!! You will be glad you did!

Ciao Ciao!!

I’m back. And what better a place to get started again than the food capital of Italy, Bologna. It isn’t often that you get to realize a dream. One of mine was to eat a bologna sandwich in Bologna. Here it’s called mortadella. And the best place to get it is a little place called Mo Mortadella Lab. It’s located down a little side alley that is easy to miss. But judging by the line, the locals know it well. There is a menu with about 12 different variations. My choice was the #3. Mortadella, stracciatella (basically the inside of Burata) sun dried tomatoes and basil. To date, without question, the best sandwich I have ever had. The roll was fresh and crunchy. The mortadella was flavorful and mild. The creamy cheese, sun dried tomatoes and fresh basil just put it over the top. I think I actually shed a tear when I was done. A special thanks to my family for helping me make this happen.

So, if you ever find yourself wandering around the alleys of Bologna and have a taste for a good mortadella sandwich, run, don’t walk to Mo Mortadella Lab. Grazie!!

Sandwich eaters!! It’s been a while! Lots has been going on the past few months but it’s time to get back and review some sandwiches! And I have found a great sandwich place to jump back in with. A little place called Krauszers.

I have driven by this store at least two hundred times over the years. It’s on route 79 in Durham CT. Driving by it so many times I never thought of it as a place to get a sandwich. Boy have I been missing out. I recently had someone suggest getting lunch there, and I ordered a basic roast beef and cheese. The roast beef was plentiful, cooked perfectly medium rare, on an amazing hard roll. Today’s choice was called a “Some Like it hot”. Fresh corned beef with Swiss cheese and spicy mustard. Simple, right? But so complex. The warm thinly sliced corned beef, the melted Swiss cheese, and the grainy spicy mustard combine to make a fantastically flavorful sandwich. While we were waiting, a gentleman came in and recommended several other sandwiches, and the master behind the counter, Sue, told us about their breakfast sandwich creations which they make different every weekend.

So if you ever find yourself cruising down route 79 in Durham and want a GREAT sandwich, stop in this little place called Krauserzs.

Hello Sandwich eaters!

What a better way to spend a rainy Saturday than to go in search of a good sandwich! My daughter Victoria and I did just that the other day. I was reading a facebook post about the best sandwiches in CT(which I disagree with), and people were commenting with their favorite sandwich places. (A great resource for future visits). Based on one of these recommendations, we tried this little place called Claudia’s.

Claudia’s is located on Farmington avenue in Farmington CT. It is easy to find as it is right at the driving range. It has several tables if you want to eat there, and a friendly staff. It was pretty busy when we were there. Today’s choice for me was the eggplant parmigiana sandwich. It came on an eight inch grinder roll, with several layers of fried eggplant, roasted red peppers, and provolone cheese. It was toasted nicely. The roll was good (not great), but it worked well with the combination of ingredients. The eggplant was really good, and they are very generous with the amount they put on it. My only complaint,(my daughter said the same thing about her sandwich, a chicken parmigiana), was that there was no sauce on it. Mine had a little, but hers had none. She said it really took away from the flavor of the sandwich. Maybe they were low on sauce. Who knows? Overall, mine was pretty good.

So if you ever find yourself traveling down Farmington avenue in Farmington CT, before you hit a bucket of balls, check out this little place called Claudia’s and see for yourself!!

Hello Sandwich lovers!!

I must first apologize for my lack of posts. Have some thing’s going on that are taking up a lot of my time, but hopefully things are back to normal and we can get back to the important things.. good sandwiches!!

What better way to get back into it than a stop at a little place called Wahoo’s, in beautiful Bermuda! We were fortunate enough to go on a cruise to this beautiful island, and experience what is billed as the greatest fish sandwich ever.

Wahoo’s is located in St. George on the far tip of Bermuda. Our driver who picked us up from the dock knew it as soon as I asked him about it. (He actually joined us for lunch). It is a local favorite, and as soon as you walk in you can tell why. It overlooks the bay, is decorated with fish, and is very laid back. Of course I ordered the fish sandwich. The fish on the sandwich changes based on what they catch that morning. Today’s fish was red snapper. It was perfectly fried, combined with tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato, and placed between two slices of toasted raisin bread. Yes, raisin bread. Strange, but it works. Well. It was awesome. The fresh fish, tartar sauce and bread were the perfect combination. It is worth the trip out there. I can see why it is so popular with the locals and tourists.

So if you ever are lucky enough to find yourself in Bermuda, do yourself a favor and find this little place called Wahoo’s and try this awesome sandwich for yourself!!!

Sandwich eaters!!!

Happy Thursday to everyone! We are back from Florida and back to local eats! And I can’t get more local than Middletown CT, and a little place called “Oh Mamma”

Oh Mamma is on Main St. In Middletown. It’s a new establishment that serves pizza, salads, grinders, and has live music most nights. The owner is a great guy who takes a lot of pride in his food. My choice on this visit was the “Nicolosi”. It is an Italian combo with too much meat to mention. Think of any Italian meat, and it’s on there. Throw on really sharp provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, roasted peppers and balsamic and you have the Nicolosi. When I got home and opened it, my first thought was “oh mamma!” It was huge, but not unmanageable. It was enough for 4 people. I still have half in the fridge. My wife got a small pizza which she said was really good.

So if you are ever in Middletown and feel like some old school Italian sandwiches or pizza, check out this little place called Oh Mamma!!

Hello from the most magical place on earth sandwich lovers!
Yes, I am at Disney World with my family. We have been coming here since my kids were little and I love it that they still enjoy it as adults. And yes, even at Disney there are sandwiches to be found. Today I found a delicious sandwich at Epcot in France, hidden in the back of the country is a little French, bakery and pastry shop. It’s counter service and you stand in line and are assigned a person to help you pick your choices from the many pastries and sandwiches in the case. (And the workers are all from France) . My choice today was a Jambon Burre. Which is a fancy name for a ham and cheese sandwich. But it was fancy. The ham was great, the cheese tasted, well, French, and it came with a Dijon butter. The star though was the baguette it came on. I always talk about good Italian bread, but the French do bread pretty good too. It was toasted and crisp and it made me feel like I was in Paris. It was very good.

Going back to Epcot later this week, and be on the lookout for another Instagram live!!

This the season sandwich eaters!!
An unexpected weekend review, but sometimes an opportunity presents itself. My wife and I were out Christmas shopping yesterday and were looking for somewhere to grab dinner. We decided on a little place called Luigi’s.

Luigi’s is on RT. 1 in Old Saybrook CT. It has been there for years, and we have been there many times. They are known for their great Italian dinners, and I went in with chicken parmigiana on my mind. But as we were looking over the menu, I noticed a story on the bottom of the menu that explained how the original owner, Luigi DiBella, was responsible for coining the term “grinder”. He spoke of how you need perfect, crunch French bread, and good quality meats and cheese, and how he would “grind “the lettuce very finely. A very interesting story so of course I had to change my selection for dinner to a sandwich. (grinder). My choice was the Italian combo. It came with spicy capicola, Genoa salami, lettuce, tomato, onions, Italian dressing all toasted in the oven to perfection. Our waitress told me it was her husband’s favorite sandwich, and I couldn’t agree with him more. It was a pleasant, warm, toasty surprise on a cold Saturday night..

So if you find yourself out shopping near old Saybrook, Connecticut, and want to treat yourself to a delicious sandwich, stop in and give this little place Luigis a try. You won’t regret it

Happy Friday sandwich lovers, and Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all the men and women who served so that we can can enjoy our way of life!!

So work today brings me to one of my favorite cities, Portland Maine. There are so many great places to get a sandwich here, but today’s choice is a little place called OHNO.

I’m not even really sure how I stumbled upon this place, except that is pretty close to the hospital where I was working. But I’m glad I did. They have many choices for either breakfast or lunch sandwiches, but In keeping with the theme of the week, I chose a breakfast sandwich. My choice was a #1, which is maple glazed prosciutto, Vermont cheddar cheese, egg and tabasco. Straight forward, but so complex. The flavor of the maple glazed prosciutto stood out against the sharp cheddar cheese. The sprinkle of tabasco gave it just enough kick to pull it all together. The bagel it came on was fresh and toasty. The place has a really cool, welcoming vibe. The workers even recommended other sandwich places!

So if you ever find yourself in Portland Maine, and want to try a great sandwich, stop by this little place called OHNO.

Welcome to the work week!!

My job requires me to travel quite a bit throughout New England. Some people hate to drive, but I actually don’t mind it at all. In fact, I enjoy being able to explore new places, and of course, new sandwiches! On my way to Danbury today, I stopped at a little place called Ami’s crispy bagel.

Alyssa from channel 8 recommended this place to me last week, and since I was going by it, thought I would give it a try. She was spot on with her advice. She told me to try the roast beef sandwich, but it was early, so I opted for a bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted everything bagel. For me, the bacon needs to be crunchy. And it was. The egg was perfectly fried, and the cheese was meaty, which pulled the sandwich together perfectly. They have about 15 different choices of bagels, muffins, and a wide choice of sandwich combinations for lunch. I will definitely be back to try the roast beef.

So if you are on 84 in Waterbury CT, and are craving a good bagel breakfast or lunch sandwich, be sure and try this little place called Ami’s Crispy Bagel!!

Welcome to the weekend!!

And what an awesome day it is! 75 degrees here in Connecticut. I’ll take it! After all the excitement of the past week, and national sandwich day, it got me thinking about different types of sandwiches, and what people like.

As you all know, my #1 priority in a sandwich is the bread. But what about what goes in between the bread? Of the thousands of combinations, what do people prefer? My brother-in-laws favorite sandwich is beef tongue. My father-in-law loves liverwurst with a slice of onion and mustard. My wife can’t resist a good chicken salad on rye. There are SO MANY combinations and choices.

So I am curious. What are your favorite type of sandwiches? And your favorite little place to get them? Let me know!!

Enjoy this weather!!
