Our History

After a decade of running the original Sully’s Irish Pub in Warren, OH. Charles Robert Sullivan Jr., “Sully”, came home to Salem, NJ where the search began throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland to find the perfect hidden gem to start his next business venture. In 2008 he came across The Witherspoon, and walked out saying, “You couldn’t give me that place.” He eventually found his way back inside only to later discover everything he wanted was right here. Hidden behind drop-ceilings, linoleum floors and old wooden walls was the bones and story of a historical landmark that helped Middletown come to be what we know and see today. Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to predict your future is to create it,” and that’s exactly what Sully decided to do when he took ownership of The Witherspoon in August of 2009.

With the help of family, friends, patrons and Middletown natives he unpeeled layers of the building and exposed stories that are now displayed across the walls. From the original brick walls that date back from 1761 that survived the Valentine’s Day fire of 1946; to the handwritten journal entries showing that both Thomas Jefferson and George Washington dined here; to the floors from a torn down Jim Beam barrel house; to the handcrafted bar and bar back; to the retired neon Everett theater sign; to the firefighting memorabilia from brave men who serve us; to the mirror that survived almost everything and reflects the greatness that this building has seen Sully found a way to unite the past, present and future. As “the present day caretaker, not the owner” he has breathed life back into the old bones of the building. Sully’s Irish Pub at the Witherspoon’s future has been recreated and left for future generations to relish in and build upon. Whether you want to call it a public house, the local watering hole or the neighborhood joint it has served its single purpose for 259 years and will continue to do so for years to come.
