South Alabama Veterans Council

South Alabama Veterans Council An organization for all people, serving all Veterans. Most Veterans groups are actively addressing these needs. starting at 8:30 AM.

A coalition of Veterans, friends, and organizations working together to further the cause of Veterans in the South Alabama area. Who We Are

The South Alabama Veterans Council has succeeded in bringing together representatives from many of the Veterans groups in Southwest Alabama in a forum that has allowed ideas, plans, and concerns to be shared and discussed. It is an informal organization of V

eterans and members of the community that is interested in the issues that concern Veterans and their families. They have projects and programs that are ongoing but also have ad hoc programs to meet a specific goal or address an immediate problem or opportunity. Prior to the formation of the SAVC, there was very little in the way of communication or coordination between organizations because there was no avenue to do so. The regularly scheduled meetings of the Council have served to fill that gap. The Council meets every third Tuesday of each month at the Saucy Q BBQ Restaurant on Government St. Usually, a guest speaker is featured making the meetings interesting and informative. Often times a member or guest is spotlighted for an achievement that either furthers the cause of Veterans or is a significant contribution to the betterment of society. The meetings are well structured to make good use of the time yet informal enough to be enjoyable. Certainly, the food available at the venue is a plus. Whether you are a veteran or not, if you are interested in joining or just want to see what it's about, you are very welcome to do so. There are no dues or formal registration requirements. You simply need to have a passion for veterans and our military and what they mean to America and those desiring freedom around the world. If you are in fact a veteran and are not a member of one of the numerous veteran organizations in our area, we encourage you to consider joining one. It doesn't matter if you're a retired military officer or a one tour domestic non-com, with the choices available, there is bound to be one that is right for you. Not only will you benefit from a healthy camaraderie, you will have the opportunity to continue to serve your local community because most of the organizations do much more than just focus on veterans, especially when it comes to family. If you need help finding a place, just let us know and we give you all the help you need.

Sitting quietly in Mobile Bay is one of the most powerful pieces of American military history you will ever stand in front of β€” and it belongs to Alabama.

βš“πŸŒ… The USS Alabama is a Wonder-class battleship that served with extraordinary distinction throughout World War II, earning nine battle stars in the Pacific theater and never losing a single crew member to enemy fire during her entire service.
Nicknamed the Lucky A by her crew, she fought in some of the most pivotal battles of the war and helped es**rt the carriers that turned the tide in the Pacific. After the war, when the Navy planned to scrap her, the people of Alabama raised the money themselves to bring her home and preserve her as a memorial β€” and in 1965 she found her permanent resting place in Mobile Bay, where she has stood ever since as a tribute to the men who served aboard her.

Walking the decks of the USS Alabama today, you can climb into the gun turrets, walk through the crew quarters, and stand on the same steel where young men from across the country lived and fought during the most consequential conflict of the twentieth century.

The battleship park also includes a submarine, vintage aircraft, and military vehicles, making it one of the most significant military history sites anywhere in the South. This is Alabama honoring her own β€” and honoring all who served. πŸ‘‡ Have you ever toured the USS Alabama in Mobile? Tell us what stood out to you most β€” and tag someone who needs to make this trip. Follow us for more proud history from Sweet Home Alabama. πŸ€βš“
