FROM BATTLEFIELD TO NATIONAL PARK: MONROE FOUGHT TO SAVE ITS HISTORY

Today marks the anniversary of the establishment of River Raisin National Battlefield Park.

More than two centuries ago, the fields along the River Raisin witnessed one of the most devastating American defeats of the War of 1812. But there is another remarkable chapter in this story—the fight to make sure the battlefield itself wasn't lost.

For years, much of this nationally significant ground looked nothing like a national park. An abandoned paper mill and other industry occupied portions of the historic battlefield. Beginning in the 1980s, the Monroe County Historical Society, City of Monroe, Port of Monroe, Monroe County, State of Michigan and many others worked to preserve and reclaim the site. The National Park Service has described this effort as a “new battle” to preserve the River Raisin Battlefield.

Their persistence paid off.

Congress authorized River Raisin National Battlefield Park in March 2009, but the park could not be formally established until sufficient historically significant land was transferred to the federal government.

On October 12, 2010, the County of Monroe, City of Monroe and Monroe County Port Authority transferred battlefield property to the United States. Ten days later, on October 22, 2010, River Raisin National Battlefield Park was formally established as the 393rd unit of the National Park System.

Think about that: ground where history had nearly disappeared beneath industrial development became nationally protected.

It happened because people in Monroe believed the story of the River Raisin mattered—not only to our community and Michigan, but to the history of the United States and North America.

The park now preserves the stories of the American, British, Canadian and Native peoples whose lives converged here during a struggle that helped shape the future of the Great Lakes region.

Because people in Monroe fought to save this ground, future generations have a place where its story can still be told.
