As a former small business owner, I love sharing news of amazing new businessses in our community…so if you haven’t tried Petrosino’s Pizza in New Glarus, this is your sign TO GO NOW!!!

I have been to Petrosinos multiple times now and every time I am impressed by the high quality of their ingredients and their dedication to delicious, authentic food. All their pizza dough is made from scratch daily-hand tossed to order, New York style-and you can definitely taste the difference! High quality cheese, made from scratch pesto (best I have had in Green County), great wine, and a warm inviting ambience. Must eats include the “Pearls of Sicily” appetizer, the Caesar salad, any pizza (we love the “Made Man,” the “Mafia Princess,” and the “Caprese”), and the Limocello cake. This family run business features a fun “mafia” theme with historical tidbits and photos throughout the restaurant and an Italian themes playlist to round out the ambience. Fresh, high quality, delicious Italian food and a fun theme- what more can you ask for?

Small businesses bring uniqueness, character, economic growth, and have a relationship with locals that can’t be duplicated by big businesses. When you support a small business you are investing directly into your community. Wishing Petrosinos continued success and hope this post encourages more people to try their great new restaurant!

As a former small business owner, I want to encourage people to shop small this holiday season. The small businesses in your neighborhood are the ones that make each individual town unique, showcase the personality of your community, are the ones that sponsor your local school events, sports teams, and organizations, and provide jobs to members in your community. Unlike big corporations, these owners oftentimes give away their own “Christmas bonus” or full salary as a bonus or holiday time off to their employees. They are the businesses working the longer hours, spending time away from their families, and giving that personal touch, so you can have a warm holiday experience. These are the businesses that truly sacrifice and support at a local level and they need your support. Spend a day in Monroe with breakfast at Amy's Corner Cafe or Sunrise Donut Café, toy shopping at Toy Haus and Edelweiss Gifts and More, lunch at Baumgartners Cheese Tavern Monroe Wi, The Garden Deli, Inc., or North Side Pub and Grill, unique shopping at House to Home Designs, JoAnne's Dress Shop, The Artful Gourmet, Busy Bee Floral, Orange Kitten Yarns, and The Artful Dressmaker, afternoon treats at Chocolate Temptation and Rainbow Confections, antiques at Monroe Antique Mall, 213 Mercantile, and Vintique Junque, dinner at @ Pancho & Lefty's Minhas Kitchen & Wine Garden or Newchopsticks, and finish the night at Bullquarian Brewhouse, LLC, Bartels & Co Tap, or Cactus Co. Booze N’ Bites!! And donate to Main Street Monroe, Inc.! Celebrate this holiday season with everything we offer right her at home- Happy Holidays!!! 🥂🎄🎉

I will always have fond memories of owning and running Black Walnut Kitchen, but it is also exciting to see the building being brought back to life in a new way with Sunrise Donut Café! Very happy to see another young family adding to Monroe’s food scene, with delicious customizable donuts! Friendly staff (you may see a familiar face from BWK!), beautiful decor, and fresh-made food- definitely encourage everyone to come visit! 🌞🍩☕️

It has been tough deciding to close Black Walnut Kitchen. However, today I received a package (the third one since I’ve been deployed), with dozens and dozens of letters from customers. It is amazing to hear from so many people about how much they loved and enjoyed the restaurant, the staff, and what we created. I am also humbled by the letters from young girls in our small town who wrote they see me as a role model. And I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the military experiences (good and bad!) of other veterans in our community. So grateful for my experience with my restaurant and this town, and looking forward to whatever comes next. ❤️

Thank you to all of our customers who have supported us these last two years!!

It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform all our customers that Black Walnut Kitchen will be closing at the end of December.

The challenges of running a business while deployed have become too great. While my staff and family have kept the restaurant running without me these last 6 months, it has been increasingly difficult without my on site leadership, and increasingly difficult for me to balance managing the restaurant while fulfilling my military obligations. I will be deployed for another 6-7 months, and don’t think it is fair to my staff and family to continue to carry this heavy burden without me.

I would like to thank all of my staff who have gone above and beyond these last six months- your hard work and creativity is what has made this restaurant so amazing and allowed it to continue this long, even with the owner gone. I would also like to thank all of our customers- I am SO GRATEFUL to have had the opportunity to open a restaurant in Monroe and be a part of this community. I have met so many awesome people, and am so appreciative to our constant stream of customers these last two years who have allowed me to live out my dream of offering creative, local, plant based cuisine.

Please come in before we close to get one last meal and thank the staff for their hard work. Again, big thanks to everyone in our community for your patronage and support. I am still interested in the restaurant business and will keep you updated on plans for future food ventures when I return!

Our Mission

Black Walnut Kitchen seeks to celebrate the agricultural and artisan roots of Green County by serving fresh, delicious food with dishes that feature locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Our plant-based menu focuses on the seasonality of produce, with items that are made from scratch with homemade sauces and dressings. We offer a variety of styles of cuisine, and our food selections change often to showcase the delicious flavors every time of the year.

To enjoy and take pride in the hard work and dedication it takes to grow something is a trait that is quintessentially Wisconsin. Whether its gathering zucchini from your mom’s garden, memories of helping Grandpa harvest corn, or enjoying ripe cherry tomatoes from your own pots on the back deck, almost all of us have some sort of experience with backyard gardening and the fruits of that labor. Our desire is for this restaurant to reflect this same passion and dedication to the region we live in. This is why we strive to utilize local farms whenever possible. We also value the artisans in our community, and source from local dairies, cheesemakers, breweries, and wineries. We feature Wisconsin cheeses and yogurts from Carr Valley, Hook’s, Odyssey and others, local wines from Hawk’s Mill Winery, beers native to Wisconsin, including Green County’s own New Glarus Brewery, and coffee beans that have been roasted in small artisanal batches by the Midwestern roastery UP Coffee.

We take pride in the community in which we live, and our vision is to produce a rotating menu that showcases the abundance this region of the Midwest has to offer, with seasonal, delicious, quality food.
