Red Harlem Readers

Red Harlem Readers Community-Based Arts Organization

Community Organization providing Concert Readings of Plays, Literature, Musicals and Poetry on Sundays from 4:00 - 6:00PM at Indian Cafe

“RED HARLEM” became a joking way, among Indian people who lived here 30-40 yrs. ago, to describe an active and thriving Native American community between 106th and 110th, including Morningside Heights.
• At one time there was a Sweat Equity building on Amsterda

m and 109th Street that was comprised of JUST Indian families.
• The Native American Education Program, a city-wide project under the aegis of the NYC Board of Education, was located in PS 165 on 109th and Indian kids attended after school classes from every borough.
• CORN (Circle of Red Nations) was located in a storefront of Columbus Ave between 106 & 107. There was a shop in the front and the big backyard was used for all kinds of Native events from Strawberry Festivals to summer day camps for Indian kids.
• Families who lived in this neighborhood were from diverse Indian nations - Apache, Cherokee, Lakota, Seneca, Mohawk, Taino, Amara, Cree, Wampanoag, Shinnecock, Waccamaw, Azteca, Tarascan, Navajo, Tuscarora, Creek, etc. The Red Harlem Readers takes its name from those Indian people who lived, worked and raised their families in this neighborhood.

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to present POWER PLAYS this afternoon. It was incredibly special to be able to see all of my short plays read together for the first time. How wonderful to watch an audience experience them and then get feedback. It was most gratifying! Jeff Stolzer, Playwright
