Most people think they already know what a Chinese restaurant in New York is supposed to be. But Chinese food is incredibly regional, personal, and tied to memory in a way that’s hard to explain until you sit down and taste it.

Our story started in Hangzhou in 1998. A lot of the dishes we serve today come directly from the food we grew up eating, alongside regional favorites from across China that deserve a bigger spotlight.

Some recipes look simple on paper, but there’s years of technique behind them. We wanted the restaurant to reflect that same balance of old and new. A little bit of that homestyle tradition in the middle of New York’s energy.

But more than anything, this place is about people. We just really love watching friends and family gather around shared dishes.

Steamed yellow Croaker is a dish you don’t really see dressed up, it’s more of a home kitchen thing. The kind of food people in Jiangnan grow up eating without thinking twice about it.

At Grandma’s, we keep it simple. Gently steam the fish layered with preserved mustard greens, bamboo shoots, and matchsticks of chinese ham. Nothing flashy, just good ingredients that work together.

The saltiness from the greens and ham seeps into the fish, and suddenly the whole thing tastes deeper, richer, but still really light. One of our cooks tasted it and said, “this is mom’s taste.” And we knew we had it. 🎯
