Opening The Coalman was a homecoming for me. I grew up around the corner from the restaurant, and my dream was to bring something warm and welcoming to a community I care so deeply about. I believe in this city and its people, which makes it even more heartbreaking that this chapter didn’t unfold the way I hoped.

The Seattle Times recently highlighted the tough realities so many restaurants are facing right now, and The Coalman has been no exception. Decisions like these are never made lightly or in isolation. They come with enormous personal, professional, and financial weight.

I am forever grateful to the incredible team who has stood by me through all of this. Their sacrifices and commitment have carried us to the end, and I could not be prouder of them.

I’m also deeply thankful for the Newcastle community. You welcomed us, gave us a chance, and we were excited to contribute in ways big and small. That will always matter to me.
The timeline of what comes next is still uncertain and not fully in our control. What is certain is the impact this place has had on our team, our guests, and the community we’ve been fortunate to serve.

Thank you for being part of the story with us. We hope to see you again before it’s time we say farewell.

We’d also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Jackie Varriano of The Seattle Times for shining a light on The Coalman and other restaurants navigating the same challenges. Her story gave voice to the struggles many in this industry are facing, and we’re grateful for that recognition.

And to our peers—both those mentioned in the article and countless others working tirelessly across the region—your perseverance, creativity, and dedication in such difficult times deserve tribute and support from us all.

🔥 This week’s special is bringing the heat—in the most delicious way. We’re featuring the Cherry Bomb fermented hot sauce from Seattle’s own Haxan Ferments, created by molecular biologist–turned–sauce queen Jessica Huszar.

Made with fermented cherry and Fresno peppers, garlic, onion, and a touch of local wildflower honey, this small-batch sauce is funky, bright, and beautifully balanced.

✨ We’re serving it with white albacore tuna over a chilled cucumber aguachile, alongside house-made tajin dusted tortilla chips—a bold, fresh dish perfect for summer nights. Available now through Saturday only!

This week’s special celebrates peak-season produce from Cabrera Farm at Bellevue Farmers Market: delicate squash blossoms stuffed with blue cheese and caramelized onion, fried in a featherlight cornbread batter, and finished with hot honey and marinated summer squash. 🌼🍯

We’ll be closed on the 4th of July to give our team a well-deserved break but will be back Saturday with regular hours (3–9 PM) and plenty of summer flavors waiting for you. 🌿

Happy Hour just got happier, and so did our menu. 🍷✨

Join us every Thursday through August for all-day Happy Hour—featuring ½ price wine by the glass, draft spritz, and select apps (yes, the burrata is on the list).

We also have some new stand-outs on the menu!

🍑 Burrata – summer on a plate with blistered peaches, prosciutto, and a splash of local vinegar.

🌿 Chickpea Fritters – golden and crispy, served with tarragon aioli and apricot-fennel chutney.

🔥 Fried Chicken Sandwich – spicy, crunchy, citrusy, everything you want in a bite.

🌙 Lamb Kofta – tender, herby, and layered with hummus, feta, pickles, and warm house pita.

🐟 Roasted Salmon – paired with elote corn salad and a bright tomato aioli.

We recommend making a reservation... but walking in for a glass and a bite is always welcome too.
