🪶 The Women Who Refused to Give Up Their Homeland

In 1817, as pressure mounted on the Cherokee Nation to surrender its ancestral lands, a courageous council of Cherokee women stepped forward with a powerful message: Do not sell the land that sustains our children and our future.

Their voices were not symbolic—they carried real authority in a matrilineal society where women played a central role in protecting the community, its land, and future generations.

Too often, history remembers treaties and politicians while overlooking the women who organized, spoke out, and defended their Nation with courage and determination.

Today, we honor the strength, wisdom, and leadership of these Cherokee women whose legacy continues to inspire generations.

🇺🇸🪶 Native America is a living legacy of strength, diversity, and sovereignty.

The United States officially recognizes 575 federally recognized Tribal Nations, each with its own government, history, traditions, and a unique government-to-government relationship with the United States.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, nearly 9.7 million people identified as American Indian or Alaska Native, either alone or in combination with another race. Native peoples represent hundreds of distinct cultures, languages, and traditions that continue to thrive across the country.

Many people imagine Native Americans living only on reservations, but today, most Native citizens live in cities, towns, and rural communities while maintaining strong ties to their Tribal Nations, families, and cultural heritage.

Native America is not one culture—it is a vibrant mosaic of 575 sovereign Tribal Nations, each with its own unique identity, history, and traditions that deserve to be respected and celebrated.

🛶 Before Wilmington, there were the Cape Fear People.

Long before European settlers arrived, the lower Cape Fear River was the homeland of the Cape Fear Indians, a Siouan-speaking people who lived in harmony with the river and surrounding forests.

They fished the tidal waters, hunted in the pine woodlands, and gathered oysters and shellfish from the coastal marshes. Their villages thrived along the river, sustained by the rich natural landscape for generations.

Like many Indigenous nations, the Cape Fear people faced devastating losses from disease, warfare, and colonial expansion. By the early 1700s, many survivors had been absorbed into neighboring tribes, leaving behind only fragments of their history in colonial records and place names.

Today, remembering their story helps honor the first caretakers of the Cape Fear River and preserves an important part of North Carolina's Indigenous heritage.
