Today shook me.

Near closing, a beautiful woman in a red dress walked into the shop with two gentlemen behind her. My son greeted her and complimented her dress… she smiled, gracious as ever.

She said she wasn’t feeling well and came for a ginger shot — because her son used to come here and get them for her.

Then she handed me something.

It was his obituary.

Tony.

One of my customers. The one who would pull up in that beat-up car, joke with me, haggle over a ginger shot… and still leave me smiling. I’d tell him, “Don’t worry about it,” and he’d say, “I got you next time.”

We never got that next time.

His life was taken senselessly in the streets of Norfolk. And today, his mother stood in my shop, still loving him, still remembering him… still coming for the ginger shots he used to bring her.

We took a ginger shot together in his honor.

This one hurt.

Rest easy, Tony. Your presence mattered more than you probably knew. Your name lives here.
