RJ Mercer's first JazzClubsNW performance was at last weekend's North Bend Haystack Music Fest. “Festivals like this, or any events that revolve around music, are the perfect catalyst for community,” RJ says. He says it's fun to perform in a close-knit town, and applauds the efforts of each volunteer and venue host who helped create the event. “Everybody was so friendly, first of all, we were so welcomed so it feels like you are immediately a part of the community.” North Bend's small-town charm—compared to Seattle—offered a refreshing break from the pace of the city. He expressed that it, “Feels great to participate and be part of something that is a great cause.”

When asked, RJ says that as a musician, he's driven by a “compulsion.” It's a feeling to which many musicians can relate—the connection between the self and the music, and the desire to grow and express oneself beautifully. “Creating art is just part of human nature, and doing it and the discovery that you find within it just makes you more human.” RJ stands by his conviction that, “[Music] brings people together, it naturally creates community, whether it's heavy metal, punk rock, country, jazz, blues, folk.”

Thank you, RJ, for being a part of this year's Haystack and spreading joy through your music. We're glad to count you among our community, and we hope that your story will inspire others to follow their musical compulsions, too!
