🇯🇵 BASUKU in Japan 🇯🇵

We’ve taken some strides this past month in Japan! Our Original flavor cake is now available in Kyoto and Osaka on a daily basis!

Just like in America, we use only the best dairy we can find. The cream cheese and fresh cream in the Japanese recipe is all sourced from Hokkaido 🥛. The Original flavor here has more of an orangey hue due to the amazing local eggs we found in Kyoto 🥚. We are grateful to all of the support and positive feedback we’ve received in Japan 🙏 Can’t wait for some of you who know the Bay Area version to make it to Japan and try this one!

Here are the locations currently serving BASUKU in Japan:

Kyoto: .kyoto - a wonderful cafe that specializes in sweet potato desserts. They also make an amazing Hokkaido Salted Butter soft cream that is 🔥🔥🔥 Pay them and their friendly staff a visit when you’re in Kyoto 🍠

Osaka: - conveniently located in the Daimaru Department Store at Osaka station, this oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle is a great place to relax and enjoy some cheesecake or their seasonal kakigori 🍧 They also have matcha products using crazy good organic matcha from our friends 🍵

More flavors will become available over time in Japan! We now head over to Taipei and will be working on cakes becoming available by the Fall 🍁 Stay tuned for those details coming soon!

アメリカと同様に、日本でも最高品質の乳製品のみを使用しています。日本のレシピでは、クリームチーズと生クリームはすべて北海道産のものを使用しています🥛。京都で見つけた素晴らしい卵のおかげで、日本版のオリジナルは少しオレンジがかった色味になっています🥚。日本でたくさんのご支持と温かいフィードバックをいただき、本当に感謝しています🙏。ベイエリアの味を知っている皆さんが、日本版を食べに来てくれるのが待ちきれません!

Such a fun pop-up yesterday ! It’s was great to see such a nice turnout for our lunch + cheesecake event! It was gratifying to see that Basuku was so well received at one of our new homes, Kyoto 京都 🇯🇵

Thank you to those of you who came out in this hot weather 🥵 We will be doing more pop-ups in Kyoto in the future and the cake will be available via special order and slices will be available .kyoto starting this weekend on a daily basis. Nearby in Osaka, slices will be available on the weekends . We will post more as we continue to grow in Japan!

Next stop will be back to Taiwan 🇹🇼 More information about when cakes will be available in Taipei will be in the coming months, but it should be sometime just after the summer!

It’s a wrap Bay Area! It’s been a wild ride these last few weeks but it’s been very fulfilling to finish just as strong as when Basuku started 🙏

These last 5 years really couldn’t have happened without bringing me down to Palo Alto to start baking 🙏. I am eternally grateful to for opening up his restaurant and space to me. Vina Enoteca has been my home for the past 5 years and Rocco has become the Italian brother I never knew I had 🤌 I could not have been any more blessed working with such a dedicated operator offering me such flexibility over the years. With a similar dedication to high quality ingredients and handcrafted pizzas and pasta, Vina Enoteca has really been a natural home (currently serving some of the best and underrated pizza in the Bay).

It’s really been an honor and a pleasure serving the Bay over the years. I’ve met so many amazing people, watched kids grow up and evolved as a person through this experience. As with any food business, it wasn’t without its challenges but the fulfillment came when I would hear the joy the cake would bring people ☺️❤️

I will be posting updates from Asia as they come and should have some fun things happening very soon! Please reach out if any of you end up in Taiwan or Japan! I hope to be back to the Bay at some point will definitely pop-up if I do!

🚨 Thank you SF 🚨

Yesterday was the last sale in SF and it was so great to see and chat with many of you who have gotten cakes over the years!

SF has been a very special place to me having worked in the City for 10+ years and a place where I’ve gotten to know so many wonderful people over the years.

A huge thank you for everyone from the early days Basuku - and to then . Would not have made it this far without all of you 🙏

Special thank you to Ramzi for offering me his space these last few years. He is such a wonderful human being and so community oriented. Always offering his space to many up and coming pop-ups - the kind of person that makes SF a special place. It’s been amazing to see this little corner store grow and aside from making some of the best sandwiches in the City, the work he is doing highlighting local business owners on the podcast is exactly what SF needs right now.

I have so many cherished memories in this City both cheesecake and non-cheesecake related which makes this departure especially bittersweet. I’m leaving wishing the work I did here somehow contributed to the culinary and hospitality traditions that brought me to this special city in the first place. I had some amazing SF mentors that taught me about the culinary history of this City and I did my best to honor the Bay Area culture of sourcing, hospitality and promoting the next generation, much like those who came before, did for me.

So grateful to the past and present of SF. Hope to be back one day 🙏

🚨 The Last Week Sale 🚨

Been really proud use only the best ingredients over the years. Having come up in the Bay at a time where sourcing was everything, I’ve done my best to be committed this Bay Area ethos (sad this is no longer something emphasized by the new generation of local food media 😢). cream has always been been the soul of Basuku and has been in every one of the 25,000 cakes made over the last 5 years.

This week will be the last sale in SF and Palo Alto for the foreseeable future. Please note the change to the Palo Alto pickup time.

The pre-sale drops tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5pm at our Online Shop (link in bio). SF pickup is Wednesday 3:30-5:30p. Palo Alto pickup is Saturday 11:30-1:30p. Slices will be available at both pickups on a first come first serve basis at both pickups. Please only order if you can pickup during the pickup window, as cakes will be forfeited if not picked up by the end of the pickup window - no exceptions. Please respect our time and policy.

Due to popular demand, we got some more Hojicha from the fine people for this last sale.

Online sales have been super intense lately with everything selling out within the first minute. Lots of people report having things in the cart, but it disappears by the time payment is processed. This is something has never repaired in their system. Apologies for that…best advice is to start refreshing the site before 5:00pm and process your order as soon as the store opens up.

Won’t put all the cakes out for pre-sale for the Saturday Palo Alto pickup so we can better accommodate what we expect to be a long queue that morning. Shooting to be able to accommodate 60-80 people between slices and whole cakes, but will post more accurate numbers on Friday.

🙏Thank you Oakland 🙏

Yesterday was the last sale in Oakland and . Thank you to everyone who came out and who has supported Basuku over the last 5 years. Basuku was born in The Town, so it definitely felt alittle bittersweet.

A very heartfelt thank you to and the team over the years. Not every 2-Michelin star restaurant would be cool with some guy selling cheesecakes out of their space, but it really goes to show how much Chef James has done to not only uplift the City of Oakland with his culinary prowess, but also support and mentor the local F&B community over the years. Not just any Chef gets a key to the city! As a 17-year Oakland resident and coming from a restaurant background, Chef James has always been the North Star for excellence in the East Bay. It’s been an honor to have collaborated with him but also call him a friend 🙏

Basuku started at an interesting time and couldn’t have happened without the support of other people, businesses and the community. Shout-out to who were all a big part of the start. As with any other food business, it’s important to recognize and respect those who came before that created awareness and paved the way. I’m forever grateful to those people and the opportunity to have served the place I’ve called home for such a long time.

This week marks 5 years for Basuku 🎂 As this wild ride comes to an end in the Bay, it’s been crazy to reflect on everything. Grateful for all of the support over the years 🙏 but it’s not over year!

This week will be the last sale jn Oakland and next week will be SF.

The pre-sale drops tomorrow (Tuesday) at 5pm at our Online Shop (link in bio). Oakland pickup is Wednesday 2:30-4:30p. Palo Alto pickup is Saturday 11-4p. Slices will be available at both pickups on a first come first serve basis at both pickups. Please only order if you can pickup during the pickup window, as cakes will be forfeited if not picked up by the end of the pickup window - no exceptions. Please respect our time and policy.

🚨 This Week’s Sale 🚨

Bringing Ube back for these next two weeks due to all of the requests. Demand has been kind of out of control these last few weeks, so apologies for those who have tried and couldn’t get one. Doing our best to make as many cakes as possible, but obviously it’s not enough for the demand. The only advice is to set Story notifications on because we will post some last minute sales (for example, the one tomorrow we mentioned in our Story). Also getting a ton of messages asking about how to get a cake or slices…all of the answers are in these posts so read all the way through. If you sent a message that didn’t get answered, it’s because the information is all in the posts.

This week we’re back in SF for our second to last sale there. Back in Oakland next week.

For those of you asking, Strawberry Mont Blanc will only be available in Palo Alto. Not trying to hold out, it’s just a difficult cake to transport. Mont Blanc cakes also only come in whole cake form - no slices.

This will be the last week for Kyoto Matcha and probably Choco Banana. Going to keep a lot of flavors going for this week and next, but the final week will likely be a much smaller menu. Also for the final week, there might not be any pre-orders, just all first come first serve. Stay tuned for more details.

Got a ton of messages from new people, so here is a post on how it works. Please read the entire post.

Sales will be going for 4 more weeks. 2 more in SF, 2 more in Oakland and 4 more in Palo Alto. Last sale will be week of June 14. Rotates between SF and Oakland every other week.

Pre-sale for whole cakes drop every week at 5pm on Tuesdays at our Online Shop (link in bio). Slices are available in limited quantities at each pickup on a first come first serve basis. We do not take orders via DM or e-mail. This week was pretty crazy for pre-orders (sold out fast) as well as slices (first person lined up about 1 hour early), so we suggest you plan accordingly. Only about 100 +/- cakes are made every week, so they tend to go fast. Once we are ‘out of stock’ at the Online Shop, that really means there aren’t any more cakes.

There will likely be some random mid-week slices available which we will post in our Stories. If by an off-chance there are any extra whole cakes, we will post in our Stories.

If you are wondering about prices, they are listed in the Online Shop and slices are 1/4 of the cake so 1/4 of the price.

Very grateful for the surge in interest and demand as we wind down in the Bay. As mentioned in the article, we are already in Japan in Osaka and working on something more permanent coming up in Taipei. We did get some new potential Bay Area leads overnight, so hopefully we can plan a return sometime in the future🤞

🚨 Basuku Update 🚨

Thank you everyone for a busy Mother’s Day weekend! Was so nice to see lots of familiar faces!

Our 5th anniversary is coming up the the first week of June.

So it’s only fitting to announce that will probably be the second to last week for Basuku in the Bay for a very long while, if not forever. One thing I’ve learned is never say never when it comes to these things and if another opportunity arises to keep it going in a different capacity, then I will jump on it. The way I’ve operated has never been a sustainable model, but it’s been great to have kept it going for all the people who have supported Basuku over the years.

Some things abroad have presented themselves, so from a personal and professional level, it was just time to embrace new challenges and opportunities. We’ll be popping up in Kyoto in July, smoking some cakes in the wood fire and doing something a bit more permanent in Taipei starting in the Fall. Really appreciate the inquiries still coming from Taiwan from time to time. We’ll post more about these things when we get closer.

For the next 4-5 weeks in the Bay, it’ll the usual schedule between SF/Oakland and Palo Alto. Probably won’t be many new flavors this month as we try to celebrate the classics. For new customers and old, look forward to seeing you over these next few weeks! 🙏

This week’s new flavor:

- Pure Strawberry - this flavor is made with Mare de Bois strawberries that have a more strawberry candy-like flavor with some strawberry preserves stirred into the batter. For the strawberry lovers out there.
- Strawberry Black Sesame - this flavor is a nice blend of our classic toasted black sesame with our new Pure Strawberry. Definitely one of our new favorites and kind gives off PB&J vibes combing the nuttiness from the black sesame along with the aromatic strawberry.
- Hot Chocolate - one of our more popular chocolate flavors brought back for Mother’s Day. This is our OG based topped with Hawt Chocolate. Like eating a slice of hot chocolate. The chocolate topping also gives a nice additional texture to the cake.
- Strawberry Mont Blanc - this is our OG cake topped with fresh Mare de Bois strawberries then topped extruded strawberry cream ‘Mont Blanc’ style. A Mother’s Day special! (Palo Alto pickup only).

Likely the last Passionfruit of the year. This is our last bag of Kyoto Matcha, so last of the year too.
