🌈 Happy Pride Month from Rathskeller Bier Haus! 🍺

As we celebrate Pride Month, we’re also reflecting on an important part of German history.

In 1897, German physician and activist Magnus Hirschfeld founded one of the world’s first organizations dedicated to advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. His work in Berlin helped lay the foundation for a movement that would spread around the globe. By the 1920s, Berlin had become one of the most vibrant and visible LGBTQ+ communities in the world.

That progress came under attack during the N**i era. Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science was destroyed, its library burned, and thousands of LGBTQ+ people were persecuted under Paragraph 175, a law that criminalized homosexuality. Many were imprisoned, sent to concentration camps, or forced into hiding.

Yet the story doesn’t end there. After decades of activism and advocacy, Germany eventually repealed Paragraph 175, recognized same-sex marriage in 2017, and continues to reckon with both the triumphs and tragedies of its past.

History reminds us that freedom, dignity, and equality are never guaranteed. They are preserved when communities choose inclusion over exclusion and understanding over fear.

At Rathskeller, we’re proud of our German heritage and proud to welcome people from all walks of life. This Pride Month, we raise a glass to those who fought for the rights many enjoy today and to the ongoing work of building a society where everyone has a seat at the table.

Tonight's summer kick-off celebration with The Day Traders will go ahead as planned from 6-10 PM, with a cover of $10. We are hoping the weather holds off tonight allowing us to party through the night! Prost!

On a sad note, due to the chance of weather we will not be having the goats at the bar for today’s event. We will have them back for Oktoberfest!
