Just a few miles west of the Inn is Rock Harbor. Devin and his sister Krystin were there the other day which reminded me of this picture of them taken 9 years ago. Their grandma and her sister Sharon played pirates on these rocks almost 70 years ago, Laurie is so happy her grandkids are enjoying her Cape Cod.

Cape Cod Rowing had a meet on the Merrimac River in Lowell, MA and Kay took first place in Women's Varsity Singles. She is amazing. She is the little girl that was holding her cousin Devin's hand in the prior post. She has always been the most caring and considerate soul. We are blessed to have their generation keeping the tradition of the Inn serving Cape Cod.

Time in a Bottle. 30 years ago when we bought the Orleans Inn our eight children were in elementary, middle, high school and college. Our twin daughters started Johnson&Wales University and received their Masters degree. The children got married, bought houses and started families. As the grandkids were born I watched the babies while Moms worked at the Inn. I brought the cousins Devin and Kay to the park for a picnic. They grew up like twins as their mothers are and are only weeks apart. We will have at least five of the grandkids working at the Inn this summer.

Laurie graduated Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing class of 1969. She and Ed started Pembroke Pines General Hospital in 1975 with two infants. Their family grew to 8 children and 12 grandchildren. Ed spent the last 30 years saving the Orleans Inn while Laurie became the anchor of her work family. They love her faith and dedication over 50 years. We celebrate her retirement.

1949 a child was born who spent every summer on Cape Cod. She loved Orleans and fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse in 1969 graduating from Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing. We married 53 years ago and she shared her love of Cape Cod. We were blessed with a beautiful family who saved the Orleans Inn 30 years ago. This song praises Laurie in her dedication to faith, family and career. We love her!

30 years ago I was in Florida at home reading the Cape Codder newspaper about the Orleans Inn bankruptcy. A year later we owned the Inn and began a massive renovation. The following year we hosted our first Thanksgiving to the public. It was amazing. We continued for about 20 years until going seasonal. It was wonderful to host so many families. Our children were in high school and college and all worked the holidays at the Inn. They were married at the Inn and now have families of their own. At some point if the grandchildren are able to extend the season we may again host Thanksgiving. In the meantime we are thankful for all the families that have supported the Inn over the years. God Bless you all. The paintings are originals by Clifford Gustafson, Laurie’s father. He was the art teacher at Dedham High School. His work is displayed throughout the Inn. Her grandfather Arthur Long was the art teacher at Brockton High. His work is displayed in the Dining Room of the Inn. They were both so talented and we are so proud of them. We love sharing the history of the 150 years of the Inn.

Recruiting staff for 2026 season at Christendom College in Front Royal, VA.
Shenandoah Valley is gorgeous! The students are amazing! It is one of the top ranked universities for success. I brought lots of Cape Cod Potato Chips to give away along with applications. I will attend 7:30 am Mass with the students and then meet with them at lunch.

You have to be here is the reason for our success. I am at the Inn 24 hours a day every day for six months. When the phone rings at 3 am and you help someone in need it is rewarding. I then go to Florida and hibernate for six months. Actually I’ll get some waterskiing in as well. Three more weeks until the Sunshine State and my wife Laurie’s Honeydo list.

Laurie is the reason the Orleans Inn is here today. She spent every summer in Rock Harbor, Orleans, Cape Cod, MA. She graduated from Cape Cod Hospital School of Nursing class of 1969. We met in Florida and were married in 1972. We bought our summer home in East Orleans in 1985. We had never been inside the Inn but had driven by for many years. We read the article in 1996 how it was in danger of being razed. We cashed in our retirement funds and bought the Inn. We put millions into saving the Inn. Our eight children all worked here at one time or another over the past 29 years. Laurie and I continue to invest in the improvements and this is our passion. I was 19 when I met this Cape Cod girl taking care of a little boy on a ventilator. As the respiratory therapist, I asked the 22 year old nurse to a party. She said "A potty?" We were married within months. She continues caring for her patients and I continue caring for the guests at the Inn.
