Before Tetris, there were tetrominoes, the five geometric shapes made of four squares that Soviet designer Alexey Pajitnov turned into one of the most iconic video games of all time in 1984. The name itself? A mashup of the Greek tetra- (four) and "domino," coined by mathematician Solomon W. Golomb back in 1953.
