One of Australia's rarest marsupials just reached an encouraging conservation milestone.
After more than 40 years of conservation work, the numbat has been reclassified from Endangered to Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Once reduced to just a few hundred animals, the species is now estimated to number between 2,000 and 3,000 thanks to predator control, habitat protection, and carefully managed reintroduction efforts.
Conservationists say the recovery is a hopeful sign that long-term conservation can make a difference. They also stress that continued protection will be essential to help the numbat's population keep growing.
