Big Chair Coffee will be open this Saturday and Sunday to be part of the celebration of Art on the Prairie. Hope to see you for a hi howdy, a cuppa Organic Turkish Blend and whatever else strikes your fancy.

Ben's Friday Treats!

For my last delivery to the shop, I made raspberry macarons. I'd like to thank everybody who has bought my pastries over the past couple years. It's been fun to be able to provide something new each week for you all. I will continue taking personal orders, as always, but will miss being able to get my baked goods out to such a varied audience. Many thanks again. --Ben

Ben's Friday Treats!

"This summer, when I lived in Hollywood, my apartment was down the street from an unassuming traditional Jewish bakery called Schwartz Bakery. It was run by an elderly woman who gave me short Hebrew lessons whenever I went in. Most of the phrases went over my head, but I remember distinctly how to say thank you, "תודה רבה," pronounced something like "todo rhaba." I was absolutely obsessed with their monstrously large black and white cookies, so I made them for the shop this week, in a more reasonable size. I hope you enjoy." --Ben

Alien Landing Craft or Delicious Delights? You decide, but hurry!

Years ago, I planted a vineyard on my farm in the hopes of bottling my own wine. This is a slow process and for the first time it looked as if I would have enough grapes to actually do something with. That is, until the birds struck. They really enjoyed my grapes. Instead of having a few buckets of fruit…I had a few handfuls. Enough for jam. Though depressed at first by this loss, I decided to combine dark chocolate ganache with this wine grape jam in a macaron to see what would happen. It's incredible. In all honesty, it might be the best macaron I've ever created. Somehow, the grape subtly enhances the chocolate into a flavor I can't quite describe. It really must be tried to be appreciated. Enjoy. I know I did. --Ben

This week I made Opera Cake. This was invented in the 50s by a Parisian pastry shop named Dalloyau, which has famously been in operation since 1682. Alternating layers of almond cake are sandwiched between dark chocolate ganache and chocolate buttercream. One of my favorites. -- Ben
