We were cleaning out files in the office when my assistant held up this post card. I said oh that must be from my brother. His first post in the State Department was in Melbourne. I was distracted at the moment by something else and didn’t pick up the card to read it until much later.
When I did, imagine my surprise to see who it really was from.
The story behind this post card is, Al Martino was driving on the NYS Thruway when he was stopped for speeding near Exit 34. He had to come before Judge Mike Perretta in Canastota.
Mike’s office in the Bruno Building was adjacent to that of Bruno Novelty’s, Louis and Dominic Bruno’s offices. The Novelty's business was coin-operated amusement machines which was founded on jukeboxes.
Mike was good at chatting with people. When he learned that Al was a recording artist, he was quick to send him next door to Lou who was in the office at that moment.
There a friendship began. The two men shared good conversation. Bruno Novelty became a faithful purchaser of Al Martino’s records for their jukeboxes, jukeboxes which were in locations throughout CNY from Norwich to Oswego, Cortland to Liverpool and so many small towns in between; they were in taverns, restaurants, colleges, rec centers, diners and bowling alleys.
Dom booked Al for numerous engagements at Three Rivers Inn.
We met a lot of celebrities through the years. Al Martino was the most genuine and loyal of all.
