Bill’s pick this week is COUNTRY PEOPLE by Daniel Mason! It’s a rollicking lyrical novel about a year in the life of a family as they strike out into the unknown (aka Vermont), leaving all the comforts of home behind and learning that some local legends may be more than legend.

We are beyond honored to be hosting MacArthur Fellowship recipient and American Book Award-winning writer Ocean Vuong on Tuesday, July 14th at 7pm at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham, MA. Vuong will discuss his latest novel, THE EMPEROR OF GLADNESS, with award-winning author and professor Kwame Dawes.

One late summer evening in the post-industrial town of East Gladness, Connecticut, nineteen-year-old Hai stands on the edge of a bridge in pelting rain, ready to jump, when he hears someone shout across the river. The voice belongs to Grazina, an elderly widow succumbing to dementia, who convinces him to take another path. Bereft and out of options, he quickly becomes her caretaker. Over the course of the year, the unlikely pair develops a life-altering bond, one built on empathy, spiritual reckoning, and heartbreak, with the power to transform Hai’s relationship to himself, his family, and a community on the brink.

Following the cycles of history, memory, and time, THE EMPEROR OF GLADNESS shows the profound ways in which love, labor, and loneliness form the bedrock of American life. At its heart is a brave epic about what it means to exist on the fringes of society and to reckon with the wounds that haunt our collective soul.

Join us on Wednesday, July 8th at 6:30pm for an evening with New York Times bestselling and award-winning author John Searles!

Single Girls is an infectious and utterly charming fictionalization of the iconic Helen Gurley Brown’s early years at the helm of Cosmopolitan, and the intrepid group of women she took under her wing to create one of the most talked about magazines of all time. John was a top editor at Cosmopolitan for two decades, first hired by Helen Gurley Brown, herself. You won't want to miss the Q+A at this fun event!

We have a limited quantity of Single Girls t-shirts that we’ll be giving away to attendees while supplies last. We hope you can join us! Learn more and sign up at www.anunlikelystory.com/searles
