Today’s appreciation post is the 3rd out of 7 until JRC/Guilder changes hands the evening of 4/22, and it’s all about the people who grow coffee and get it into our own hands- the producers, exporters and importers! Simply put coffee is the entire the reason for the existence of our business. The relationships around procuring it are our most cherished, and the ones that will be the hardest to say goodbye to.

We’re thankful for the patience, enthusiasm, and support shown to us from the Importer/Exporter reps we’ve worked with from our first single bag of coffee from to our largest purchase with . Thank you to Emily, Michelle, Jen, Neil, Chelsea, Susan, Sal, Katie, Troy, Emily & Michael, Alicia, Collin, Felipe, Sarah, Cassie, Emma, Dathan, Jeanine! Also to those who championed the COPC Project on our behalf with your producer partners and your bosses. We are so lucky to have most of y’all in our own local community and to call you our friends.

To the producers who’ve welcomed us into their farms, countries, and families; we are forever grateful. Thank you Olvin, Andres, Sal & Marielisa, Jose, Jorge, Angele and Alex, João, Blanca, Luciana, Olga, Flavio & Maria Lucia. It’s through your hard work and dedication that we’ve experienced multiple coffee harvests over the years. You and your teams make magic happen everyday! To our COPC Project collaborators, thank you for walking the talk and shaking things up in the industry with us. We can only hope that it has inspired others to pick up the torch like it did when it was passed to us.

Thank you so much to everyone who commented and sent us well wishes yesterday after our big announcement! It means the world to us that this endeavor has made a positive impact. Now it’s our turn to show our appreciation to everyone who has been involved. This is the 1st post of 7 leading up to our last day as co-owners on Monday, 4/22.

Thank you to our co-owners Toby Roberts and Carrie Lind for believing, supporting and investing in this business together. We didn’t quite know just what we were all getting into back then but your excitement and belief in its potential propelled us forward towards opportunities, and carried us through the challenges!

Toby- you’re both a dreamer and a doer; two must-have qualities in an entrepreneur but ones not everyone has in equal measure like you do. You’ve taught us to take risks (tho Mike may never budge), and to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Your knowledge of finances made both the COPC Project and our solvency possible, and your guidance for managing our team, well, manageable. You make a great third-wheel and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!

Carrie - The fact that you chose to support an unknown small business without a business plan speaks volumes for your belief in us. Your vibrancy, intellectualism, and blunt honesty always kept us on our toes. You never doubted that we’d make it through the pandemic and made your own sacrifices so that we could. We thank you for being our rock!

Business partnerships are sometimes a shot in the dark but having a shared history, like the four of us do, committed us to make the best of our vision and mission for JRC/Guilder and for each other. We thank you both and look forward to finally getting a chance to celebrate like we did 7 years ago!

Dear friends of Junior’s Roasted Coffee, We have some special news to share with you today! This post will be the first of many this week so bear with us as we have a lot to say.

The idea of Junior’s began ten years ago on a walk through Prospect Park in Brooklyn where Mike and I were living at the time. NYC was our “gap year” as Mike worked at Blue Bottle while considering another grad degree, and we wrestled with the thought of moving to a place we didn’t know and weren’t particularly excited about. We discussed a long held dream of his to start a coffee roasting company, and decided it would be something to help introduce us to our new community of Tallahassee, FL. In reality, it was more like we had to create something to do since we wouldn’t have any friends and didn’t know where we’d get coffee. Thankfully, after moving there, we were welcomed by an amazing group of friends and a growing coffee scene. We were also figuring out what our future together would look like as neither of us wanted to have children, and we shared an interest and background in hospitality and service. I had also worked as a barista and attended culinary school, but my definition of “service” was rooted in community after working in nonprofits for a handful of years. We had experienced both the inspiring and the toxic side of the industry, and knew that if this project was going to be our own, it would have to be driven by strong ethics and include academic research that Mike had begun during his sustainability science program. And with that Junior’s was conceived! (Continued in comments)

To SCA Expo last year in Portland when we held our 5th Ask Me About Cost of Production event. This was our favorite of the event series over the years because it brought together the complete supply stream to share how to implement a Cost of Production Covered Project. To SCA Expo 2019 when we held the second Ask Me About Cost of Production event in Boston in collaboration with Boston Intersectional Coffee. There are many coffee people in this photo who have championed and supported the project since it’s inception in 2018. We’ll miss seeing y’all at Expo this week but hope that it inspires and energized just like it has for us in the past. We’re still promoting the Cost of Production Template that’s available at no cost on our website. Look out for a flyer with the link to the template circulating during Expo and pass it along to your roaster friends!
