Wow… it’s hard to believe it’s been 11 years since SaRon and I turned our dream into reality bringing Southeast Asian New Year to the park here in Portland, Oregon.

As a cofounder of this magical event, I am so extremely humbled to witness how much it has grown year after year. What started as a vision to celebrate Cambodian and Lao New Year has now blossomed into a beautiful gathering representing five Southeast Asian countries that celebrate the New Year in April Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

But more than anything, this journey has been about people.

Throughout the years here’s To every single committee member and volunteer past and present there truly aren’t enough words to express our gratitude. This event stands today because of your dedication, your long hours, your sacrifice, and your belief in something bigger than yourselves. From the early planning stages, to the physical labor, to the behind-the-scenes coordination, to showing up year after year with heart and commitment you have poured your time, your energy, and your love into building something so meaningful for our community.

Many of you have given your sweat, your hard work, your weekends, your late nights, and your unwavering support to keep this tradition alive. Because of you, this is no longer just an event it’s a legacy. It’s a space where culture is celebrated, where community is strengthened, and where the next generation can feel proud of who they are and where they come from.

Seeing the younger generation standing alongside the original team members from 11 years ago step up and continue this work is one of the greatest blessings of all.

❤️✨ MARCH 2026 — CELEBRATING 14 YEARS OF FOOD, FAMILY & COMMUNITY ✨❤️

🚨❗️ URGENT: We Need Your Support Now More Than Ever ❗️🚨

It is never easy for us to ask for help, but today we truly need the support of our community.

For the past 14 years, Mekong Bistro has been more than just a restaurant. It has been a place where people gather to share meals, celebrate milestones, connect with culture, and build lasting friendships. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support our community has shown us throughout the years.

However, as many of you know, Mekong Bistro is located in an older building, and city and state safety regulations continue to evolve. In order to remain fully compliant with current building, fire, and safety codes, we are now required to complete several major upgrades.

These include meeting modern standards set by the City’s Building Bureau and Fire Marshal, such as updated fire suppression systems, proper fire extinguisher placement, emergency lighting and exit signage, ADA accessibility improvements, electrical and plumbing updates, occupancy requirements, ventilation standards, and other structural improvements required for older buildings to meet today’s codes.

Right now, we are facing a critical challenge. Our building requires urgent upgrades, including the installation of a fire sprinkler system, in order for us to continue operating. Without these improvements, Mekong Bistro could be forced to close its doors, which would mean losing a place that has become a meaningful gathering space and cultural hub for so many in our community.

The cost of these upgrades is significant, and we cannot do this alone.

With your support, we can complete these necessary improvements, refresh and remodel our space, and continue serving our community for many years to come. Our hope is to preserve Mekong Bistro as a place where people can gather, celebrate, and connect.

We’ve supported local schools to participating in neighborhood events and charitable efforts. One of our rewarding legacy is being the founders of New Years In the park at Glenhaven Park. Through food, friendship, and collaboration, Mekong Bistro has helped create meaningful connections, uplift local causes, and strengthen the sense of community right here in our neighborhood.
