Its been a few weeks since he's been at my table, and its taken me this long to get it down. The Cowboy and I had an unlikely friendship for the last 15 years or so, a lot less than most have known him but none the less a friendship built on trust. Most will say I might have seen his worst years physically, but his mind had a story or two to tell. He spent many an afternoon sitting at the counter telling me about his sister's and his childhood, his children and wives, the army, horseshoeing, and of course the bull ridin' days. I listened carefully, ate my lunch or drank my coffee quietly. My favorite thing to hear him talk about was "The Cowboy Way" , these usually came about because someone wasn't acting right! He, always full of life when reciting those memories, always good, always sharp in his mind. We, collectively called him "Cowboy", I dont know who started it but thats all I ever called him. He asked me once "why do you call me cowboy and why are you so nice to me"? I simply said "well you're a real Cowboy aren't ya"? He laughed and said "there's plenty of others that are more of a Cowboy than me" and I said " none I've ever met" and that would also get a good grin out of him even on the grumpy days. Cowboy was a true legend in our house! A man of honor, a man, respected and loved by so many. He will surely be missed at our table. There will never be another like you, and the Cowboy Rides Away! Rest in Peace
