This Friday, January 30th, Rockford Roasting Company will be closed in participation in the nationwide general strike against ICE. This wasn’t a decision made lightly. Running a small business always comes with its challenges, but maintaining our humanity is of ultimate concern. Business as usual should not be expected while families are forced apart and people are being killed in the streets.
The foundation of our company is relationships - from farmers we get to visit each year who grow our beans, baristas working side by side, and regulars who become friends. We’re formed by conversations, creativity, acts of caring, and taking care of the people around us.
When people in our wider community are hurting and living in fear, it feels important to pause and stand in support. Participating in the general strike is a small way we’re choosing to respond to the truly fighting things we’ve seen and the unwelcomed emotions we’ve had forced upon us.
Change doesn’t only happen in big moments. It can start small, - close to home - in how we care for our neighbors, support one another, and show up with empathy. However you choose to care, it matters.
If you need coffee for Friday, please stop in before 5pm today and stock up. Our team would be glad to share tips so you can still make a great cup at home. Otherwise, we’ll see you Saturday, ready and grateful to serve our community.
We aim to keep choosing people over profits. Thank you for your understanding and support.
With love,
— Rockford Roasting Company
