The Case for Self-Examination: A Lawyer’s Take on the Jacket Rate
Let’s open with the evidence. UWI research places Jamaica’s paternity discrepancy rate between 20 and 25 percent. Roughly one in four Jamaican men is raising a child that isn’t biologically his. The verdict in the court of public opinion has already been delivered, and the defendant is always the woman.
But a case is rarely as simple as the headline suggests. Let’s examine the conduct of all parties before we render judgment.
Exhibit A: Absence. A man who is rarely present, physically or emotionally, forfeits the standing to be shocked when someone else occupies that space. You cannot abandon your post and file a grievance when the position gets filled. The domino table, “the road,” the endless nights with the “bredrin,” these are choices, and choices have consequences.
Exhibit B: Unrealistic demands without investment. Some men want a partner who works full time, runs the household, raises the children, and still shows up each evening like she just left a spa. You’re asking for a five star woman on a one star budget, with zero star presence. That’s not a relationship. That’s a job posting with unpaid overtime, and good employees resign.
Exhibit C: Misallocated pursuit. Many men chase women who’ve made their disinterest clear, sometimes for years, while the woman who is present and loyal becomes background noise. You cannot pour resources into a venture that already rejected your proposal and expect your existing investment to remain unaffected.
To be clear, this is not a defense for infidelity. It’s an argument for context.
The honest question most men won’t ask: if you were cross-examined about your presence, provision, and pursuit this past year, what would the record show?
Neglect creates vacancies. Unrealistic expectations create resentment. Misdirected pursuit creates distance. And distance creates opportunity.
So before the next round of outrage over jacket statistics, open a different file. Call it self-examination. The evidence is already there.
