This Juneteenth, Bad Weather Brewing is proud to release our contribution to De-Pale the Ale, a collaborative project organized through Brewing Change Collaborative in partnership with filmmaker Onteya Zachary and brewer Bri Smith.
Inspired by the idea that there is no single way to interpret a pale ale, De-Pale the Ale invited breweries across Minnesota to create their own unique expression of the style while celebrating the people, stories, and perspectives helping shape the future of craft beer. Each participating brewery brewed its own version, showcasing both creativity and community through a shared project.
Our interpretation is an English Style Extra Pale Ale brewed with Thomas Fawcett Low Color Maris Otter and Pale Ale malt, then layered with classic English hops First Gold and East Kent Goldings. A malt forward Pale Ale that has notes of caramel, toffee, butterscotch, and toasted malt along with Herbal, floral, earthy, marmalade notes from the hops.
The project is connected to Fermenting Our Place, a film by Onteya Zachary that follows Bri Smith's journey to becoming Minnesota's first Black woman head brewer while exploring questions of belonging, visibility, and who gets to occupy space within the brewing industry.
