This time last year, I was petrified, experiencing extreme exhaustion and burnout. When the biggest snowfall in ages hit unexpectedly, I took it as an opportunity to slow down and rest. I was literally "stuck" in the house for several days, and the cafe had to close for a FULL WEEK. (Snow removal ain't for the faint of heart!)
January is always a tough month for restaurants & small businesses. The cafe was having a hard time bringing in enough revenue to feel comfortable, and I knew the food license would have to be renewed at the end of March. So I tapped into my yoga practice and I prayed- I asked God, "Where would you have me go and what would you have me do?"
Then February came, and more snow. More days closed, more revenue lost.
I struggled with the idea of closing, not for fear of failure, but because the idea of letting people down broke my heart. I opened the cafe because I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience not only about hospitality, but also the sad truth that most food in our society is poison, especially from many fast food & chain restaurants. Meal times here are not valued and appreciated like those in other cultures. We prioritize quickness over quality. I want to show people there is a better way. My life's purpose is to help others- that is the definition of hospitality.
This year as we experience some record breaking snow once again, I am still working in a restaurant, and it is still slow in January. I still have plenty to offer from Hapisoul.
I am still struggling to pay off the debts that it acquired, however I am rested, healthy, and happy, knowing the weight and pressure of running a small business will soon be long behind me.
Some of you expressed the need for a Hapisoul cookbook, which I would love to share with you. Or personal chef appointments where I come to your kitchen and teach you how to make a batch of your favorite soup. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below, and feel free to reach out to me personally!
