Sugar Slam 2014-2015 Season Schedule
Sugar Slam is pleased to announce that this year we will have many themed slams! Keep in mind, all rounds will be clean slate.
September 11th - WoWPS Qualifier (1 minute, 2 minute , 4 minute) featuring Warhol Kaufman
While the open mic will be open to everyone as always, the slam is reserved for those who live their lives as or identify as women. The winner will represent Sugar Slam at the Women Of The World Poetry Slam in Albuquerque New Mexico in March. Poets will need a 1 minute, a 2 minute, and a 4 minute poem prepared.
October 9th - Horror Slam featuring Melle
Start of official season.
In preparation for Halloween, this slam will be centered around all things that go bump in the night. Terrify us!
1st round: Horror Movies. Draw inspiration from you favorite (or least favorite) horror film. Persona of the villain, how the victims should have behaved if they wanted to survive, how it could have been more frightening, etc.
2nd round: Horror Cover. Bring a poem/ excerpt from a story written by someone else. This round will have a 4 minute time limit.
3rd round: Poet's choice. Your choice, but if 3/5 judges determine the piece was not "horror themed", you will be disqualified.
November 13th - Traditional Slam featuring Chris Leja
10 poets, all original material, 3 minute time limit.
December 11th - Cover Slam featuring Erin Kirsh
1st round: Cover of your choice. Bring any poem written by someone else.
2nd round: Contemporaries Roulette. 10 modern day performance poems will be provided and will be chosen at random by the poet before the first round begins.
3rd round: Yesteryear. Bring any poem of your choice, so long as it was written prior to 1900.
January 8th - Traditional Slam
10 poets, all original material, 3 minute time limit.
February 12th - Last Chance featuring TBD WoWPS rep
This will be the last chance for poets to compete for a spot at Team Selection Finals.
March 12th - Team Selection Slam
The top ten poets from the season will compete to represent Sugarhouse at the National Poetry Slam in Newark NJ in August. Whoever gets first place will have first round immunity in April.
April 9th - IWPS Qualifier 1, 2, 4
The winner will represent Sugar Slam at the the Individual World Poetry Slam in Washington DC in October.
May 14th - Mixtape Slam
Three rounds of music focused poems. Poets will select three of the following prompts to perform in any order they wish.
Disclaimer: If the poet chooses prompts 3, 4, 5, or 6, the pieces must have never before been performed at Salt City Slam or Sugar Slam (or Voice Boxers).
1. Cover the lyrics of a song verbatim (announce the artist and song title)
2. Sing or rap for at least 20 seconds in your poem
3. Write a poem about punk rock, jazz, or country music.
4. Write a response piece to a popular song, announce the song title and artist.
5. Write about dancing and dance in your piece.
6. Write a poem that uses music as the central metaphor to talk about something else.
June 11th - Childhood's Hour Slam
1st round: Re-imagining of a classic children's story/fairy tale. What happens AFTER happily ever after? What if it was written nowadays? What major fact does the original get wrong? Etc.
2nd round: Persona piece from the perspective of a child. This can be yourself from the past, your children, or any child in a work of fiction.
3rd round: Sock puppet theater. Prepare a poem that involves sock puppets, you can make you own to bring or use one that will be provided.
July 9th The Anti Slam
More details will be revealed when the date gets nearer.
