Congratulations to award-winning chef Reem Assil .assil and Zaynah Hindi! This new worker-owned cooperative café and production bakery will be opening in Jack London Square on June 26.
“I started selling bread at farmers markets just blocks from here, and this neighborhood has always held a special place in my heart,” says Reem.
Beginning in 2014, with the support of the kitchen incubator program, Reem began selling bread at farmers markets, and later ran the beloved restaurant Dyafa in Jack London Square before the pandemic.
Reem and co-founder Zaynah opened their first restaurant in Oakland’s Fruitvale in 2017, which earned national recognition, and later expanded Reem’s California to the Mission District, where they earned a ranking in the SF Chronicle’s 2026 Top 100 Restaurants in the Bay Area.
“What makes this moment truly meaningful is that we are not doing it alone. For me, a worker-owned business has always been the dream. Sharing the work, the ownership, the responsibility, and the rewards with the people who make it all possible.”
Three founding worker-owners — Rebeca Cid Del Prado, Angela Santos Lima, and — are graduates of Reem’s apprenticeship program.
And now they’re bringing Reem’s bold new vision to 85 Webster Street.
Inside the 3,000 sq ft space, you’ll find a grab-and-go menu that celebrates Arab flavors with a California spirit: signature saj-griddled flatbread wraps, fresh-baked hand pies, pistachio-cardamom sticky buns, and their famous chocolate chip halawa cookie.
A mural of Palestinian red and California gold poppies by Oakland artist adorns the entrance where you can grab a cardamom latte from the espresso bar - featuring Oakland’s own - and take it down to the waterfront. Or linger outside and watch cold-fermented sourdough pita being made at scale in the production bakery that’s visible from the sidewalk.
🗓️ Mark your calendars!
