A 130-year journey through San Francisco’s most historic golf course.

This is the first post in a series exploring the hidden history of Presidio Golf Course through historic photos, maps, and stories from the archives.

Most golfers know Presidio for its towering trees and incredible views.

Few realize they’re walking through one of the oldest golf courses on the West Coast.

The story begins in 1895.

What started as a simple 9-hole course for Army officers has evolved into the 18-hole public course thousands enjoy today.

But this isn’t just a golf course.

It’s part of the Presidio of San Francisco—a National Historic Landmark where nearly 250 years of military, environmental, and recreational history overlap.

Every hole has a story.

Let’s start at the beginning.
