If you look way way back in the past of the things that led up to Shipwreck Ice Cream becoming Shipwreck Ice Cream, there was this guy.

At a time when I went from becoming a Scuba Diving Enthusiast to a Scuba Diving Professional Captain Joe Amaral played a big role as a guide, a mentor, and an enabler.

It is a lot of years and a lot of dots to connect from diving to ice cream, but safe to say Joe was an important part of it happening.

Joe has spent some of his retirement years writing about his treasure hunting and diving adventures.

I have been lucky enough to have heard a lot of these stories first hand, but I'm still looking forward to reading the book!

Captain Joseph Amaral Jr. gained nationwide acclaim when he discovered the captain’s ring on the famed shipwreck De Braak off the coast of Delaware. He is considered a true expert in sea recovery and shipwrecks and is highly regarded in the field. In this book, he generously shares his fascinatin....

Happy Earth Day 2026

In 2011 when Shipwreck was getting ready to open, we were told that every penny counts and that Styrofoam being significantly cheaper should be the choice for our ice cream cups.

As a business that celebrates the ocean the vision for Shipwreck from day one has been to be as environmentally friendly an operation as possible. A Styrofoam cup and plastic spoon that would exist in the environment for generations past the lifespan of the child who consumed it did not fit that vision. We started with paper cups and biodegradable spoons. Later the spoons became bamboo to utilize a fast growing and easy to replenish natural resource, as well as a nice solid ice cream spoon.

We stopped selling plastic water bottles early on and then switched from 16oz plastic soda bottles to aluminum cans. We also installed a barrel and sink in the yard with filtered drinking water to provide free drinking water for our customers as well as a place to wash ice cream off a messy child.

We switched from plastic straws to the well-hated paper straws until one of our staff went on vacation and discovered straws made from Agave. Agave straws are made from the same plant that is used for Tequila and offer a natural alternative that is as good as plastic. Tequila is distilled from the heart of the Agave plant and the material for the straws is “upcycled” from the waste from this process, the rest of the plant. These straws are also better for you than Tequila.

Frappe lids were the last plastic product that went out the window here at Shipwreck. A friend once commented to me about the absurdity of using a paper straw and a plastic lid to be environmentally friendly, but finding a better alternative that had a reliable supply source was tricky. Last year we found and switched to a very nice dome paper frappe lid. Again, a more expensive alternative, but it won’t outlive the person who uses it for the brief time it takes to consume their frappe.

We will continue to try and improve what we do and how we do it in all aspects of the business.

As a business that thrives from the support of the community and families, we have and will continue to strive to leave the best future for all our customers, especially the little ones who rely on our good decisions today to give them their best tomorrow.

Happy Easter, Everyone!

If you didn't get enough chocolate in your Easter Basket, or didn't get lucky during the Easter Egg hunt, Shipwreck is open until 8:00 PM tonight to help fill any gaps in the Easter Bunny may have left.

For all those that don't celebrate Easter, it is still a great day for ice cream, even if it is a little gray....
