Sarasota locals know the best spots are not always by the beach.

A century of old Florida charm! 🐊🌴 We’re celebrating 100 years of history and memories inside the iconic 1926 Sears & Roebuck fishing cottages that house Owen’s Fish Camp and Burns Mercantile!

Tucked away in the Historic Burns Court District, built by legendary Sarasota developer, Owen Burns, from 1924 to 1925 with designs by Thomas Reed Martin. The District consists of fifteen concrete block and masonry, stucco-finished, Mediterranean Revival style, one-story bungalows, each with its own one-car garage. Mr. Burns’ personal home was located at 431 Burns Lane.

Owen Burns initially came to Sarasota in 1910 to take advantage of the sports fishing. By 1913, Owen and his wife had purchased the Halton Sanitarium located on Gulf Stream Avenue. He was a significant force in the development of the City of Sarasota, both in the construction realm and the real estate-field. Mr. Burns purchased more than 75% of the present city from Col. J. Hamilton Gillespie.

Want a real piece of history? The banyan tree that marks the picturesque entrance was a gift to Owen himself from Thomas Edison.
