How to Cultivate a Kiwi Tree in a Pot

Kiwi fruits, originally from Asia, have found ideal conditions to grow in Italy. Italy is the third-largest producer of kiwi in the world, following China and New Zealand. There’s a variety of kiwi with smaller fruits that can be easily cultivated in a pot at home. In this article, we’ll explain how to have your own kiwi tree conveniently within reach.

Before you begin, it’s good to know that it takes 3 to 5 years for a kiwi plant to bear fruit. Kiwi plants can be grown from seeds, which are available in nurseries or online stores. Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-formed seedling.

Choose a pot that is 45-50 cm in height and has drainage holes. If the plant outgrows the pot over time, you can always transplant it.

Kiwi plants need support as they can grow several meters in height. However, you can manage the plant’s size through pruning.

Kiwi thrives when cultivated in well-draining soil, rich in organic matter, and with a slightly alkaline pH. Avoid clay-rich soil.

The kiwi plant requires full sunlight for healthy growth. Select a well-lit corner in your home, and the same applies to a balcony. If kept outdoors, remember to protect your plant from frost.

Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid excessive watering as waterlogged conditions can lead to root rot.
