Hi Everyone. I'm sure the majority of you have picked up on the issue we've been having with our landlord. Sorry it's taken so long to come to a conclusion and let everyone know what's been happening. We finally learned what is going to be the future for the Temple just a couple of hours ago. To start though, we want to give you a little bit of history.
About 5 years ago, Adam and Alan were driving around trying to find a spot to grab a beer. We realized pretty quickly that there was no spot that existed that we felt comfortable. From rude bartenders to warm cheap beer that tasted like something died in the lines, we always felt there could be a better spot. We immediately laid out a plan to not only open a tap room where we served great beer, but a spot that the people of our community could use to gather in comfort. We worked extremely hard to create a welcoming environment, free from beer snobbery and sloppy drunks. Everyone that passed through our doors was greeted by my brother and myself and we're proud of what we were able to accomplish. We have made tons of friends and watched the community come together. We helped form personal and professional relationships for dozens of our customers. Running this business has been a dream come true. Unfortunately this has all come to an end... against our will.
Our landlord and building owner has refused to replace our AC units (there's two AC units). They are completely broken after 35+ years of use, and are in such poor condition that they've been deemed a fire hazard. Three separate HVAC companies have all said the same thing including his own HVAC tech. Rather than doing what he is contractually obligated to do, he has violated our contract, and held our business hostage by trying to force us into signing a modified contract where we'd be stuck for the next five years regardless of what happens in the future. Based on our conversations, he'd also like to increase our rent to account for the cost of the AC units and essentially have us pay for what is his responsibility. Instead of spending money on his property, he chose instead to spend his money on an attorney to avoid having to replace them. He had also previously attempted to illegally evict us while we were shut down due to Covid, and has kept the building in a constant state of disrepair. From the leaking roof, to the exposed electrical, no working water heater, dry rot, mold, no ADA compliant bathroom, overflowing septic tank, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. We spent years and A LOT of our own money to correct these issues. The building owner has stolen our dream, and profited off of our money and hard work to get his building units back into compliance with the El Dorado County Building Department and Environmental Health Department.
We never felt that we were just in the beer business. We were in the business of building our community up. Motivated by a passion for beer, that was simply a vessel that we used to bring people together. We refuse to do business with people whose only motivation is greed. We are sad that this is coming to an end, but grateful that we got to meet so many amazing people in our community and beyond. When you see that FOR LEASE sign go up where we once stood, just know that this was 100% not our choice to close. And if anyone out there is thinking about leasing these units, beware. He will try to scam you into paying for these replacements.
Finally, we can't say thank you enough to all of our loyal customers. We could sit here for hours trying to come up with the words to express our gratitude and we wouldn't be able to because words wouldn't do it justice. If you've gotten to know us then you already know how much your support and friendship means and we're eternally grateful.
Cheers,
Adam and Alan 🍻
