A lot of people don’t realize that I own Smithville General Store.

I’ve generally stayed quiet about that because I’d rather the focus be on our team and our community. But there’s something that needs to be said.

One of the hardest parts of owning this business has been watching some of my employees deal with behavior that no one should have to tolerate at work.

I’ve had customers step in when situations became uncomfortable. I’ve had employees trade shifts to avoid certain individuals. I’ve had team members try to make drinks as quickly as possible just to get someone out of the store. I’ve had minors approached by grown married men in ways that were completely inappropriate.

Today was the icing on the cake.

While trying to determine who had been making two of my employees uncomfortable, the individual involved called the store to complain about how one of them was treating him and threatened to leave a bad review.

He is no longer welcome at Smithville General Store.

Let me be absolutely clear: the women who work for me deserve a safe and respectful work environment. They are hardworking, honest, and kind. They come to work to serve our community, not to be harassed, intimidated, pressured, or made uncomfortable.

If you make one of my employees feel unsafe or repeatedly cross appropriate boundaries, you will not be welcome in my store. I don’t care how often you come in, how much money you spend, or what review you leave afterward.

I will choose my employees over your business every single time.

To the many customers who have looked out for our staff, stepped in when something didn’t seem right, and treated our team with kindness and respect: thank you. You are the reason this store is such a special place.
