The grills are hot, the sardines are fresh, and Portugal's most beloved summer tradition has arrived at Otilia's Cafe!

🐟 Flame-Grilled Portuguese Sardines are on special this weekend as we celebrate Portugal Day and the rich heritage of Portuguese culture.

Did you know? Sardines have been a staple of Portuguese cuisine for centuries. Every June, towns and cities across Portugal fill with the aroma of sardines sizzling over charcoal as families gather to celebrate the popular festivities honoring Saint Anthony, Saint John, and Saint Peter. In Portugal, summer doesn't officially begin until someone burns a sardine on the grill!

😄 Legend says the Portuguese can solve almost any problem with olive oil, garlic, and a sardine. We haven't tested that theory, but we're willing to try.

This weekend’s dinner special is the one that smells like summer in Portugal…

🇵🇹 Flame Grilled Portuguese Sardines 🇵🇹

Before there were food influencers, there were Portuguese grandfathers standing over charcoal grills in flip flops, grilling sardines while arguing about soccer and politics. Sardines have been a Portuguese tradition for centuries — simple, smoky, salty, and best enjoyed with good bread, olive oil, and people talking way too loud.

Every summer, streets across Portugal fill with the smell of grilled sardines during the Festas de Santo António and São João. If you know, you know. If you don’t know… this weekend is your chance.

We flame grill them the old-school way over open fire until the skin gets crispy, the inside stays juicy, and your fingers smell like charcoal and olive oil for the next 3 hours. That’s how you know they’re good.

Served with traditional sides and plenty of Portuguese attitude. 🇵🇹🔥

At Otilia’s, our Piri Piri Chicken Bowl starts with grilled chicken that’s actually seasoned spicy — marinated with herbs, garlic, peppers, and spices before it ever touches the grill. No plain chicken tossed in hot sauce pretending to be piri piri around here.

🥓 Entremeada
Juicy, marinated pork belly grilled to perfection — the kind that makes you forget table manners. A staple at Portuguese backyard cookouts (aka churrascos), where someone’s always “in charge” of the grill and refuses to share their secret marinade.

🐖 Leitão à Negrais
Whole roasted suckling pig, crispy on the outside, melt-in-your-soul tender on the inside. This beauty comes from the village of Negrais, where locals take their pig very seriously — like, “argue with your grandmother” seriously.

🍲 Dobrada
Not your average comfort food — this is old-school Portuguese soul. A rich, slow-cooked tripe stew with beans, rooted in Porto tradition. Legend has it the people of Porto gave all the good meat to sailors during the Age of Discovery and kept the tripe for themselves… and somehow turned it into a national treasure. Talk about making something out of nothing. Respect.
